Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder blasts Aussie anti-abortion politicians during Queensland show
As a devoted Pearl Jam fan since their debut album “Ten” back in 1991, I’ve been through countless emotional highs and lows with Eddie Vedder and his bandmates. Their music has accompanied me through heartbreaks, triumphs, and everything in between. So, when I heard that they were finally coming back to Australia after a decade-long hiatus, I was beyond excited!
US rocker Eddie Vedder has blasted Australian anti-abortion politicians at a live gig Down Under.
During a concert at the People First Stadium on the Gold Coast on Wednesday, the lead singer of Pearl Jam (who is 59 years old) made a remark within one of his songs.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but note that, much like his advocacy for reproductive rights, Eddie Vedder seemed to voice his thoughts on the recent U.S. election during a brief interlude between tunes.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement over a recent article in The Gold Coast Bulletin that mentioned Eddie Vedder subtly acknowledged our current president multiple times during a performance. What a thrill it was to witness such a poignant commentary!
At the end of their performance for the night, they played Neil Young’s 1989 song “Rockin’ in the Free World” as their closing number.
In an unexpected moment during my heartfelt speech to the enthusiastic throng, I took a moment to honor some esteemed local legends of Australian Rules Football.
Vedder expressed his preference for the less favored teams, specifically mentioning the Gold Coast Suns, and added that he finds both their male and female players impressive and bold.
He continued: ‘The ball’s coming at you or let’s say an accident happens, or let’s say an election happens, or an election that feels like an accident, don’t react. Just respond.’
His remarks about abortion came during a performance of the song Daughter.
Instead of playing their usual style, the veteran grunge band boldly added a popular Pink Floyd hit from the 1980s, “Another Brick in the Wall,” into one of their own songs.
Instead of singing the original lines from Pink Floyd’s song, “Hey teachers, leave them kids alone,” Vedder opted to rephrase it as, “Hey politicians, leave those girls alone.
The commentary seemed like it was written as a reaction to a rally that happened in Brisbane recently, where many people had assembled to uphold abortion rights prior to the upcoming Queensland election.
Supporters of the Keep Abortion Legal protest expressed frustration towards the Liberal National Party for their position on abortion issues.
The Gold Coast gig kicked off the Australian leg of Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter world tour, which is their first trip Down Under in ten years.
It comes after Vedder apologised to Pearl Jam’s Aussie fans for snubbing the country for a decade.
Pearl Jam, made up of Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron, last took the stage in Australia during the Big Day Out music festivals back in 2014.
In the 90s, the last performance of the legendary grunge bands in Australia was simultaneously their farewell to that continent, as the Big Day Out festival, which had been an annual event, was discontinued the very next year.
As a die-hard fan eagerly awaiting their comeback, let me clear up some speculations about Pearl Jam’s upcoming gig. Contrary to any humorous rumors floating around, it wasn’t our show that led to their extended absence in Australia. I want to sincerely apologize for the lengthy hiatus and express my excitement for their much-anticipated return!
He humorously said, “I’m not sure what led to Big Day Out’s demise, I just hope it wasn’t something we did.
‘But my apologies to Australia; we should’ve been back and I don’t wanna p**s you off.’
Eddie explained that the absence of Pearl Jam performances in Australia over the past ten years is due to an inconsistent touring schedule.
Our travel schedule is irregular and unpredictable, often jumping between continents like Europe, North America (including Canada), and even as far as Australia. There seems to be a plan behind this chaos, but at times, executing that plan may take more time than any of us prefer,” he explained.
He shared that it’s important for him, along with the rest of the band members, to take some space from one another prior to their performances, so they can ensure their music and shows stay exciting and new.
Pearl Jam excited their Australian fans immensely by announcing that they will be performing at three stadium concerts as a part of their Dark Matter world tour.
The tour aligns with the debut of their 12th studio album, Dark Matter, which dropped on April 19 – a date also marking the introduction of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department.
Pearl Jam originated in Seattle, Washington back in 1990, and their first studio album, “Ten,” dropped the following year in 1991. This album is renowned for its iconic hard rock tracks such as “Alive” and “Even Flow.
Initially, their debut album didn’t achieve much success, but by 1992, they skyrocketed to fame and became a significant part of the global grunge music movement that originated in the region, leading to a surge in sales.
Noteworthy groups like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains also achieved significant fame during the ’90s, alongside Pearl Jam.
On November 16th and 18th, Pearl Jam is scheduled to perform at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. Following these concerts, they will travel to Sydney for performances at Olympic Park on the 21st and 23rd of November.
