Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle breaks silence on Ada’s fate in The Immortal Man

Spoilers for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man follow.

Sophie Rundle, who plays Ada Thorne in Peaky Blinders, has finally spoken about what happens to her character in the new movie, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. The film, set during World War II, sees Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) return to Birmingham to deal with his past and uncover a Nazi plot.

The movie shows that Ada stepped up to take her brother’s place in Parliament after he was gone, effectively filling the void he left.

Tommy Shelby’s son, Erasmus – known as ‘Duke’ (played by Barry Keoghan) – is given an order to kill his aunt Ada by John Beckett, a man working with British fascists (Tim Roth). However, at the very last moment, Duke refuses to go through with it.

Beckett shockingly kills Ada by shooting her in the head, and she dies in her son Karl Thorne’s arms (played by Kasper Hilton-Hille). This fuels Tommy’s determination to get revenge.

When discussing how her character’s story ended, Jenna Rundle explained to Radio Times that she was happy with the outcome. She felt that in large, epic stories like this, you want the ending to be as impactful as the character’s journey.

She was deliberately being vague to avoid revealing any surprises, explaining that her comment felt like a proper ending to the last fourteen years of her life.

She admitted she sometimes wishes she could redo things, armed with the knowledge she has now. However, she realizes that if she did, the outcome would be different, and perhaps less impactful. She believes that her initial naiveté and fearless attitude were actually a source of strength.

Although Rundle was happy with how her character left the show, we at Digital Spy thought Ada deserved a more substantial ending. We noted that factors like the story’s needs, the length of the show, and the actress’s schedule likely determined how much of a role Ada could have in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

Despite the limitations of the storyline, her character—a vital part of Peaky Blinders all along—deserved a more meaningful ending than simply being an afterthought in her brother’s narrative.

You can now watch Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man on Netflix. The show is also available on BBC iPlayer.
