Peaky Blinders’ Joe Cole reveals he is ‘somewhere’ on the neurotypical spectrum as he discusses his late former co-star Helen McCrory

Peaky Blinders' Joe Cole reveals he is 'somewhere' on the neurotypical spectrum as he discusses his late former co-star Helen McCroryPeaky Blinders actor Joe Cole revealed on Friday that he is ‘somewhere’ on the neurotypical spectrum.

Joe, 35, portrayed John Shelby, the younger brother of central character Tommy Shelby, on Peaky Blinders from 2013 to 2017.

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for spotting talent and resilience, I must say Joe Cole’s revelation about being somewhere on the neurotypical spectrum resonates deeply with me. His journey from humble beginnings on The Bill and Holby City to captivating audiences as John Shelby in Peaky Blinders is a testament to his unique abilities and determination.

After being absent from the final two seasons that experienced a significant boost in audience numbers, Joe decided to depart from Peaky Blinders to aim for leading roles instead. His decision paid off as he won the British Independent Film Award for Best Actor in 2018.

Last Friday, Joe, who has a history of roles in shows like The Bill, Holby City, and the popular teen series Skins, shared his journey into acting with The Times.

He said: ‘I’m somewhere on the neurotypical spectrum. I found it hard to focus on my coursework and doing the work required to get to university. Drama and theatre studies was a different matter. That gave me the fire in my belly to go and pursue something else.’

Additionally, Joe paid tribute to his Peaky Blinders fellow actor, Helen McCrory, who passed away due to breast cancer in 2021 at the young age of 52.

Helen, who is wedded to Damian Lewis, played the tough-as-nails character Aunt Polly on the show, and she is also the aunt of the Shelby brothers.

Joe expressed that those who shine the most vividly in life might get taken away prematurely, which is deeply saddening. There was an unspoken sense of alertness and positivity when one was with her.

He added: ‘She was amazing with my little brother, Finn. Peaky Blinders was his first acting role.  I know they were very close. She left a real mark on the world. I assumed everyone was as charismatic and funny as her, but as I’ve gone through the industry I’ve realised: “Oh, wait, no, that was just Helen.”‘

In the fourth season of Peaky Blinders, Joe’s character, John, met an untimely end. However, it’s possible that audiences might see him again since a movie version is about to be released.

It was officially announced in June that the original writers and directors of Peaky Blinders, along with actor Cillian Murphy (playing Tommy Shelby), will be coming back for a Netflix movie adaptation of this popular British TV show, which concluded its run in 2022 after six seasons.

Cillian, aged 48, is going to once more take on the character of Thomas Shelby in a period crime series, which takes place in Birmingham during the late 1910s to early 1930s. The show’s creator, Steven Knight, and Tom Harper will continue their roles as writer and director respectively for this production.

Netflix verified the news using a picture of the script, as opposed to stating it directly. Meanwhile, the Academy Award-winning actor shared with Deadline: “It appears that Tommy Shelby isn’t done with me…

I can hardly contain my excitement as I find myself once again collaborating alongside the brilliant minds of Steven Knight and Tom Harper, bringing the legendary world of Peaky Blinders to life on the big screen. Needless to say, this is a dream come true for every dedicated fan like me!

Back when I took on directing duties for Peaky Blinders more than a decade ago, we weren’t certain about where the series would head, but we sensed that the magical combination of our talented cast and compelling scripts held the potential for something truly dynamic.

It’s thrilling to join forces again with Steve and Cillian, as we delve back into the world of ‘Peaky Blinders’, a tale deeply rooted in family. We can’t wait to share this cinematic experience with viewers globally on Netflix.

While Steven added: ‘I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.’
