Peaky Blinders creator thought Game of Thrones was a kids show before hiring Aidan Gillen
As a long-time fan of gripping television series, I must confess that my first encounter with Steven Knight’s work left me utterly astounded – not because of its brilliance, but due to his apparent ignorance towards the mature content of one of the most popular shows in recent memory: Game of Thrones.
Despite its seemingly cute title, “Peaky Blinders” is actually a gritty crime drama depicting the violent world of English gangs following World War I. This show has catapulted creator Steven Knight, formerly known for his work on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire,” into the limelight as a respected screenwriter. Currently, he’s one of many writers working on a “Star Wars” film and is also preparing a “Peaky Blinders” movie that takes place during World War II.
In the ensemble of ‘Peaky Blinders’, there was Aidan Gillen, a familiar face to ‘Game of Thrones’ viewers as Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish, the cunning master of coin and schemer. Starting from the fourth season in 2017, Gillen portrayed ruthless character Aberama Gold. At a recent Royal Television Society conference in London, Steven Knight admitted that before hiring Gillen, he thought ‘Game of Thrones’ was a children’s show; his son was captivated by it, and Knight formed an impression based on its depiction of dragons. However, Knight experienced a sudden realization when someone informed him that Gillen had played a brothel keeper. “What do you mean? It’s a kids’ show!” Knight exclaimed.
Previously, Knight had joyfully purchased the DVD boxset of “Game of Thrones” as a Christmas gift for his son. One wonders if they had a conversation about it afterward.
It’s hard to fathom that a person involved in television, like Knight, might not be acquainted with the extensive content of “Game of Thrones” given its long-standing popularity. By the time Gillen joined the team, “Game of Thrones” was nearing its end, and the infamous Red Wedding event had transpired, causing a massive stir on the internet. However, it seems that managing your own crime drama keeps one quite occupied.
From a gamer’s perspective, I can’t wait to dive back into the gritty world of the Peaky Blinders! Cillian Murphy is reprising his role as Tommy Shelby, joined by newcomers Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan. Although we don’t have a set launch date just yet, director Steven Knight has promised it will be nothing short of mind-blowing and truly spectacular. So buckle up, folks, because this ride is going to be unforgettable!
