Before the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man, creator Steven Knight recommends revisiting three important episodes of the show. The film will feature Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby coming out of hiding during World War II.
With everything on the line for his loved ones and his nation, the character is forced to deal with his personal struggles and decide if he’ll embrace his past or destroy it completely.
Before the film hits theaters this week, show creator Frank Knight told Netflix which episodes are essential viewing. He recommends starting with the very first episode of season one, as it establishes the core themes and ideas of the entire series.
What to Read Next
He explained that the show immediately establishes Tommy Shelby’s character. The opening scene shows him riding a horse through an industrial area, relying on visuals – his expression, demeanor, and overall attitude – to convey who he is, without any dialogue.
Knight believes the episode is incredibly revealing about the series, providing crucial insight into the family’s identity, actions, and the source of their intimidating reputation.

He highlighted the season two finale, calling the scene where Tommy seems to be dying his absolute favorite moment from the entire show.
He recounted how the man was surrounded by three armed people and had already had his grave dug. The man asked for a moment to smoke a cigarette, using that time to reflect on his life, his regrets, and what he wished he’d done differently. The speaker believes the audience wonders if this is the moment the man will die.
He manages to survive after one of the men shoots the other two. According to Knight, this reveals a crucial turning point: the character, previously unsure about living, now actively chooses to embrace life, as seen at the end of episode six.

The show’s creator particularly praised the season six finale, saying it brings many storylines to a satisfying conclusion and resolves key issues.
He hopes the story is full of unexpected twists. Ultimately, Tommy faces the person who tried to kill and betray him. Tommy has a chance to shoot them, but he chooses not to – a decision the old Tommy wouldn’t have made. Instead, he holsters his gun, returns to his horse, and rides off into the sunset.
Knight pointed out that Tommy rides away on a white horse, a deliberate change from the black horse he rode in the first episode. This symbolizes a shift, suggesting Tommy might be healed and moving towards a more peaceful life.

Honestly, I’m really hoping this movie blows our minds! The writer said they’ve packed it with a ton of surprises and big reveals, and I’m so ready for it. I want to be genuinely shocked, you know?
This film delves deeper than ever before into Tommy Shelby’s character, exploring his desires, his relationships – both loving and hostile – and what truly motivates him. Ultimately, the story centers entirely on Tommy, making this a very personal film for him.
The new Peaky Blinders film, ‘The Immortal Man’, will hit cinemas on March 6th and become available on Netflix on March 20th. You can currently watch the full Peaky Blinders series on both Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
