Haley Lu Richardson admits she has no idea if her character will be back on the popular show Slow Horses, just like the viewers.
Created by the team behind The Spy Who Dumped Me, Ponies stars Kristen Richardson and Emilia Clarke (known from Game of Thrones) as the wives of deceased CIA agents. After their husbands die on a mission, the women decide to become agents themselves. Set in 1970s Moscow, the series follows them as they go undercover to uncover a possible spy within the agency and investigate the circumstances surrounding their husbands’ deaths.
Haley Lu Richardson recently told ScreenRant that she doesn’t know if her show, Ponies, will return for a second season on Peacock. When asked about updates during an interview about her new movie Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, she jokingly said she’s kept in the dark about any plans. Despite this, she’s hoping the show gets renewed because she really enjoys playing her character, Emilia, and had a lot of fun making it.
I’m thrilled with how people are reacting to the show and connecting with Bea and Twila’s friendship. I genuinely adore playing Twila – she’s become a really meaningful character for me, almost therapeutic. Continuing to play her, I think, would be good for my own well-being and personal growth.
Featuring Adrian Lester, Atrjom Gilz, and Vic Michaelis, the series Ponies quickly gained critical acclaim, earning a remarkable 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised its blend of comedy and spy themes, drawing comparisons to the Apple TV+ show Slow Horses. Since its debut a month ago, Ponies has consistently remained among the top 10 most-watched shows on Peacock.
Many fans are eager for a second season of Ponies, as the first season ended with several cliffhangers. We learned that both Chris and Cheryl were working as spies for the Soviets within the CIA, but their motivations and how Chris survived remain unknown. Even more dramatically, Bea and Twila were last seen threatened by KGB agents, suggesting they’ll face imprisonment or worse in the next season if it happens.
Although Richardson doesn’t have inside information about the show’s future, Fogel and Iserson revealed before the premiere that they had plans for a second season of Ponies. They originally pitched the show as something that could continue for multiple seasons and even considered expanding the setting beyond Russia. However, they also previously stated they weren’t sure if the show would be renewed, despite having a long-term vision for it.
Even though the future isn’t certain, Ponies appears to be in a good position to be renewed for a second season. It’s received positive reviews, the people involved want to continue the story, and Apple TV+’s success with Slow Horses shows there’s an audience for this type of show. If Ponies keeps attracting viewers, Peacock is likely to announce its return soon.
