Peacock’s 2-Part Crime Series Is One Of Its Best

Despite only running for two seasons, Rian Johnson’s show, Poker Face, is still considered one of Peacock’s best original series. The murder mystery format has been popular on television for a long time, and it’s hard to create something new in the genre because so many shows have already done it.

The mystery genre has seen many variations on television, from scary ‘whodunits’ like Scream, Scream Queens, and Slasher, to teen-focused mysteries like Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars. There are also more relaxed, classic murder mysteries such as Murder, She Wrote and Diagnosis: Murder. Beyond these, some shows like Twin Peaks offer dark and complex mysteries, while others, like Miss Fisher’s Mysteries, provide a lighter, more playful take on the genre.

As a huge mystery fan, I was really blown away by what Rian Johnson did after Knives Out. In 2023, he created Poker Face, and it totally refreshed the classic ‘whodunit’ format. The show stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, and she’s amazing – she can just tell when someone is lying. Each episode feels like a brand new, self-contained murder mystery, but with a really clever spin that kept me hooked.

Charlie’s remarkable talent for detecting lies was interesting, but Poker Face did something even more unexpected: it took inspiration from the classic detective show Columbo. Similar to Columbo, each episode of Poker Face starts by showing the audience who committed the murder and how, then focuses on Charlie as she tries to figure it out.

While the celebrity appearances on Poker Face definitely boosted its popularity, it was the show’s unique concept that really made it special. Currently, murder mystery shows are having a moment, with popular examples like Only Murders in the Building on Hulu, The Residence on Netflix, The White Lotus on HBO, and The After Party on Apple TV+.

Let me tell you, Poker Face had a tough act to follow. A whole wave of shows had already jumped on the murder mystery bandwagon, and many were trying to recapture the playful, satirical tone of Knives Out. It’s funny, really – a lot of these shows probably wouldn’t have gotten made if Knives Out hadn’t been such a hit. So Poker Face really needed to be something special to break through all the noise.

Despite a crowded television landscape, Poker Face managed to shine thanks to its strong lead character and impressive cast. The show consistently delivered engaging and surprising murder mysteries over its two seasons, proving creator Rian Johnson’s talent for the genre.

How Poker Face Is Different From Other Whodunits

Lots of shows are currently putting a fresh, often darkly comedic, twist on the classic murder mystery. To really grab attention, Poker Face smartly revived the unique storytelling approach of Columbo – revealing the crime and criminal upfront, then focusing on how the detective solves it. But simply copying Columbo wasn’t enough; the show also introduced other clever changes to the typical murder mystery formula.

Traditional ‘whodunit’ mysteries were most popular in the 1980s, while shows with twisty, suspenseful plots—often called ‘mystery box’ shows—became more common in the 2000s and 2010s. Fortunately, the creator of Poker Face had a lot of experience with complicated storylines, allowing the show to combine the best elements of both formats.

I really enjoyed Poker Face as a classic ‘case-of-the-week’ mystery – each episode was a fun, self-contained puzzle. But what surprised me was how the show subtly layered in a larger story about Charlie herself. It wasn’t just about solving crimes; we slowly learned more about who Charlie was and what made her tick, adding a really satisfying depth to the whole experience. It worked brilliantly as both a standalone show and a character-driven series.

Throughout its run, Poker Face received positive reviews for successfully using its charming lead character and her continuous storyline to overcome the typical, repetitive nature of murder mystery shows. While it could have simply felt like a throwback to Columbo, Poker Face’s strong storytelling, centered around Charlie, made it a captivating show in its own right.

Why Poker Face Was Canceled After Two Seasons

It’s always disappointing when a well-received TV show gets canceled, especially one that’s innovative and keeps audiences guessing. That happened with Poker Face, which Peacock ended after just two seasons in 2025, despite almost everyone loving it. However, the creator, Johnson, hinted that the story might not be over completely.

Johnson mentioned he’s looking for a new network to air the show, but with a change: Peter Dinklage, known from Game of Thrones, would take over the role previously played by Charlie. This suggests that if the series is renewed, the new season won’t immediately follow the events of Poker Face‘s second season finale.

It’s disappointing that Poker Face is over, as it was a fresh and engaging show that demonstrated how the classic murder mystery could still be done well, even after so many years. The reason for its cancellation isn’t obvious, because we don’t have access to the streaming service’s viewership data, despite the show receiving excellent reviews.

I was really disappointed to hear Poker Face was cancelled, but honestly, it’s still one of the very best shows Peacock has ever put out. They’ve got some newer, grittier mysteries like All Her Fault now that are getting a lot of buzz, but if you love a good mystery, you absolutely have to check out Poker Face. It’s a gem!
