As a long-time fan of sci-fi series, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment hearing that Peacock has passed on Sam Esmail’s Battlestar Galactica reboot. Having grown up with the original series, and then being captivated by the brilliant reimagining from the early 2000s, I was eagerly awaiting a fresh take on this timeless tale.
In 2019, Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot, disclosed that he was developing a new take on Battlestar Galactica, the classic sci-fi series from the late ’70s about humans fighting to survive after a devastating war against robots. It’s possible he’s reimagining the 2000s version of Battlestar Galactica, which brought the story into contemporary context. With popular, large-scale genre shows like Game of Thrones and Foundation currently dominating the scene, could it be time for another refresh of this series?
It seems that Peacock has declined the opportunity to proceed with the rebooted reboot, which is now being offered to other studios. I recommend they consider Apple TV+ instead. With shows like Foundation, Silo, Severance, For All Mankind, Invasion, and Time Bandits already under their belt, it appears that Apple TV+ has an insatiable interest in sci-fi content. It’s a haven for science fiction enthusiasts over there at Apple TV+.
It’s unfortunate that the show can’t start earlier. Esmail is well-known for creating ‘Mr. Robot’, although he hasn’t had another major success since then. The reboot of ‘Battlestar’ might have been that success, but it could have suffered from poor timing. The entertainment industry is still recovering from the writers and actors strikes in 2023, and studios are trying to find ways to cut costs. In these circumstances, launching an expensive reboot of a well-known sci-fi series might have been too much for Peacock, which isn’t really known for big genre projects. The ‘Twisted Metal’ show, preparing for its second season, is probably the closest thing it has to that.
If this project gets green-lit for production, Sam Esmail wouldn’t be the showrunner – that role would go to Derek Simonds instead. However, let’s not delve into the specifics just yet. For now, all I can wish is that the revival of Battlestar Galactica finds a suitable platform. Remember to contact Apple; they might offer you a pilot order by the end of your meeting.
