James Gunn, talking about the show *Peacemaker*, has hinted at a strong connection between it and *Man of Tomorrow*. This, along with the intense secrecy surrounding the last three episodes of *Peacemaker* Season 2, led many to believe something big was happening. Episode six, “Ignorance Is Chris,” confirms that the show is indeed setting up the next *Superman* movie, and introduces a major change to the established storyline.
The latest episode of Peacemaker centers around the 11th Street Kids venturing to a different Earth to find the original Peacemaker. Meanwhile, General Rick Flag Sr. is determined to recapture Peacemaker, as he’s responsible for his son’s death. Realizing Peacemaker can open portals to other dimensions, Flag enlists the help of his top expert in that kind of technology.

Rick Flag visits Belle Reve Penitentiary, a prison for people with superpowers, where both the Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos are held. Lex Luthor is also an inmate there, and he’s understandably unhappy about being locked up in a metahuman facility following the recent events involving Superman. This situation gives Flag a way to negotiate with Luthor, ultimately paving the way for the ‘Man of Tomorrow’ storyline.
How Peacemaker sets up Man of Tomorrow
Once Flag made it clear what he needed and a complete pardon wasn’t possible, Luthor accepted a deal for a chance to prove himself. He provided Flag with a scanner to locate Peacemaker and his portal-making device. In return, Flag agreed to move Luthor to the Van Kull facility, with the understanding of future cooperation.

Van Kull is a prison in the DC Comics universe, located just outside Metropolis. It’s special because it was built to hold super-powered criminals and other dangerous inmates. Interestingly, it’s only been featured in three comic books. A separate Van Kull prison, this one in National City, appeared in four episodes of the TV show *Supergirl*, which is part of the *Arrowverse*.
Even though details are still emerging, bringing Lex Luthor to Metropolis seems to be setting him up for a future team-up with Superman. James Gunn recently told Howard Stern that the upcoming Superman movie will involve Lex and Superman reluctantly working together to face a major new enemy. Having Luthor located in or near Metropolis will make that collaboration much simpler.
