As I read through this heartfelt tribute to Paul Teal, a talented actor whose life was cut tragically short at the tender age of 35, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration and sorrow. His journey was filled with moments of triumph, from his first acting credit on One Tree Hill to his recent roles in Outer Banks, Deep Water, and The Staircase. It’s clear that he left an indelible mark on the screen and stage alike.

Actors from One Tree Hill are mourning the death of their fellow cast member Paul Teal, who unexpectedly passed away at 35 years old this past Friday.

In 2009, actor Teal, famously known for his role as Josh Avery in the seventh season of a TV series on the WB network, passed away on November 15 following a tough fight against pancreatic cancer.

On a heartfelt Instagram post shared over the weekend, Paul’s future spouse, Emilia Torello, broke some devastating news, which led to an abundance of sympathy messages from Paul’s fellow cast members.

As a grateful colleague who worked closely with Paul during our shared time on One Tree Hill’s seventh season, I extend my heartfelt love and prayers to his family and friends in this difficult time. Paul was an exceptional individual, consistently demonstrating kindness and making each day on set enjoyable and memorable.

Additionally, she urged the One Tree Hill cast to offer comfort to Teal’s loved ones. She implored, “Let us envelop his family and companions in our prayers.

Sophia Bush, known for playing the beloved character Brooke Davis, expressed her touching sympathies on social platforms in tribute to her deceased fellow actor.

Very sad to learn that Paul Teal has passed away,” Sophia posted on her Instagram Story on November 18th.

She mentioned that they, along with Hilarie Burton Morgan and Bethany Joy Lenz from their podcast Drama Queens, have only recently begun rewatching One Tree Hill episodes using the handle @dramaqueensoth. She commented on how impressive his acting skills are in those episodes.

In simpler terms, on November 17, Bethany Joy Lenz, a previous cast member who portrayed Haley James Scott in the series, paid tribute and expressed her sorrow over the loss.

Her sentiment is: My spirit feels weighed down. Paul Teal had an uncanny ability to illuminate any space he entered effortlessly. With his radiant grin, contagious chuckle, and warm soul, one couldn’t help but feel drawn to him.

For nearly six months, I collaborated intimately with Paul during our theatrical adaptation of “The Notebook” by Ronnie Nielo in 2006, where he portrayed Noah. He was both reserved and amusing, exhibiting a remarkable ease on stage that seemed as if it were his natural habitat. Truly remarkable! It felt like he was wearing his own skin up there. You simply couldn’t look away from him.

In due course, I felt thrilled to be helming an episode of One Tree Hill, where I had the opportunity to introduce a new recurring character named Josh, a notorious movie star. Given his charming self-deprecating wit and eagerness to fully embody any role, Paul was an ideal fit for this part. He was delightful to collaborate with in any setting and incredibly generous as well.

Occasionally, we managed to keep our connection alive. I can’t help but feel that it could have been stronger. There were so many instances where I intended to reach out, only to be sidetracked. It’s made me realize how fleeting life truly is. This thought has been on my mind a lot recently. Life is transient.

This video features some images of Paul in his memorable role as Noah Calhoun from our small-scale production, ‘the little black box’. The song playing is ‘Sunday Train’, a standout solo for Noah, which was sung by Paul and recorded that same year.

‘Now at 35, he’s taken another train. He was too young to die. Far too young. I’m gutted.

Paul, your time among us felt akin to a whirlwind summer love affair for everyone fortunate enough to know you, whether it was brief or prolonged. It was electrifying, passionate, heartwrenching, and indelible. Nicholas Sparks penned this sentiment in The Notebook novel.

Summer flings can come to an end due to various circumstances. Ultimately, they share a common trait – they’re like fleeting shooting stars. They offer a brilliant burst of light in the sky, a momentary peek at eternity. Just as swiftly… they vanish.

‘I’ll miss you, Paul. Thank you for sharing your light with us. @paulteal.’

In easier terms, the Opera House Theatre Company in Wilmington, North Carolina announced that Teal passed away following a brave fight against cancer. They expressed that the light in our midst seems less vibrant now, as one of our most radiant stars has departed.

Originating from Wilmington, Paul captivated numerous local stages with his creative acts and extraordinary skill, making a lasting impression on the theater scene.

Known affectionately by many as “JoJo,” he was admired not just for his artistic talents, but also for the warmth and kindness that endeared him to so many.

His impact will continue through the affection he inspired in those who knew him, as well as the many tales he breathed life into, be it onstage, onscreen, or simply among us. He wasn’t merely an exceptional actor within our acting circle but a cherished companion. Paul, at 35 years old, was more than just a talent; he was a valued friend.

Throughout this week, we’ll post selected performance clips as a tribute to the extraordinary individual and artist that Paul was.

In “One Tree Hill,” Teal’s debut role, his character Josh initially dated Alex Dupre, portrayed by Jana Kramer, before revealing he was gay.

In the year 2021, he made an appearance in two separate episodes of the series “Outer Banks.” Additionally, he starred as Deputy Clark in the movie “Deep Water,” which was directed by Ben Affleck and featured Ana De Armas.

He played Brad Wolgamott in 2021 series The Staircase alongside Colin Firth and Toni Colette.

He was an accomplished stage actor, starring alongside Emilia in 2022’s Newsies in Wilmington.

Among the productions he has been involved with are Big River, Into the Woods, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Shakespeare in Love, and Sister Act. His performance in one of these earned him the Wilmington Theater Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2018.
