Paul Rudd explains his surprising reboot of ’90s cult classic with Jack Black

Paul Rudd playfully shares tidbits regarding a fresh take on the ’90s beloved series, “Anaconda,” featuring Jack Black in the cast.

Announced last year, the film sees The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent writers Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten take on scriptwriting duties, while Gormican is also on board to direct.

Speaking to Collider, Rudd opened up about the upcoming film, describing its comedic tone and citing Gormican’s previous work.

“It’s the same director [as The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent], and the tone of that movie, which was kind of a meta-comedy, it’s like that,” Rudd explained.

He continued: “It’s about a bunch of people who are certainly inspired by and loved the movie Anaconda from the ’90s, but it’s not a remake. It’s a totally unique thing, and it is funny.”

Asked what rating the film is likely to receive, Rudd said he was unsure, confirming that filming on the project is almost complete.

Regarding the rating, I must admit that I’m not certain. However, we still have around seven days ahead of us, and it’s been an absolute pleasure, to put it simply.

While specific details of Rudd and Black’s roles are yet to be revealed, the reboot will reportedly focus on a group of friends who, facing a mid-life crisis, decide to remake their favourite movie.

The main characters are described as an actor who is best known for a role on a cop show and a director who moonlights as a wedding videographer.

Joining Rudd and Black on the cast are Selton Mello, Thandiwe Newton, Steve Zahn, Ione Skye and Daniela Melchior.

Released back in 1997, the original followed a National Geographic film crew who were taken hostage by a hunter and forced to hunt and capture the world’s largest and deadliest snake.

The movie turned out to be an unexpected success at the cinema, featuring a top-tier ensemble comprising Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, and Jonathan Hyde.

Anaconda will be released in cinemas on December 25, 2025.
