HBO has recently revealed a trailer for an upcoming Paul Reubens documentary set to air on May 23rd. The two-part film, called “Pee-wee as Himself,” delves into Reubens’ decades-long portrayal of the legendary character Pee-wee Herman. The project is based on over 40 hours of interview footage and was made possible by conversations between director Matt Wolf and Reubens, who passed away in 2023. These discussions, which sometimes led to disagreements about creative control, also allowed Reubens to discuss his personal life and sexuality openly.

In addition to Pee-wee himself, the cast also features some of his co-stars from “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” including Natasha Lyonne, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Laurence Fishburne. Other notable actors include Debi Mazar, David Arquette, and Laraine Newman. The movie is overseen by executive producers Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, and the directors of “Uncut Gems,” Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie.

The Hollywood Icon Who Fell From Grace But Eventually Got Up

In the 80s, Paul Reubens was widely recognized, often unable to distinguish himself from his Pee-wee Herman character in public and interviews. This continued until 1991 when his career took an unexpected turn for the worse. He was arrested for inappropriate behavior at an adult film theater, triggering a media storm that effectively ended the popularity of the beloved children’s character, Pee-wee Herman.

After experiencing a significant setback in his career, he found himself playing secondary characters until 1999 when he starred in the superhero film “Mystery Men”. In 2001, he demonstrated his dramatic talent in “Blow”, following which he predominantly worked behind the scenes on voiceover projects. In 2016, he returned to his iconic role of Pee-wee in the Netflix movie “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday”, marking one of his final acting appearances. Posthumously, he appeared in the film “Quiz Lady”, where he portrayed himself.

In 2023, Reubens sadly succumbed to respiratory failure following a long fight against cancer. His condition had been kept private, and it was only after his death that he shared a pre-written message with his Instagram followers: “I’m sorry I didn’t reveal my struggles earlier.
