Paul Reubens Breaks Silence on ‘Pedophile’ Rumors in Shocking Final Recording
Paul Reubens, famously recognized for his endearing character Pee-wee Herman, addressed longstanding speculations that had trailed him over the years – through a previously undisclosed audio recording, which was made public following his demise.
The message appears in Pee-wee’s Himself, the posthumous HBO documentary that premiered Friday.
In July 2023, at the age of 70, Reubens concluded his life, marked by years of grappling with conjecture and the consequences of a series of legal issues that eventually led to a decline in his previously thriving career.
In the movie, he shares details about being arrested for indecent exposure at an adult theater in Sarasota, Florida back in 1991, describing it as a pivotal – yet greatly misinterpreted – experience.
He admitted, “The consequences were severe when I was taken into custody. People were surprised because they only knew me as Pee-wee Herman. Suddenly, I had a mugshot that resembled Charles Manson. It’s astonishing how cruel and harsh some people can be, with their hurtful comments and thoughts about me.

In the following years, the situation deteriorated further when law enforcement officers conducted a raid on his residence, confiscating his collection of antique artwork that portrayed homosexual themes; certain pieces were deemed to be child pornography by authorities.
Reubens was never convicted, but the incident fueled damaging rumors that stuck with him.
In his last personal recording, made only a day prior to his demise, Reubens bravely confronted everything directly.
Primarily, what drove me to create this documentary was the desire for others to truly understand who I am and experience the hardship and agony I faced due to being mislabeled as something I’m not – a pedophile, he expressed.
I aimed to convey through my actions and writings that the foundation of my entire career has been love.
In the documentary, it’s revealed that Reubens openly identifies as a gay man, providing an honest account of his life as a closeted individual in the entertainment industry.
He confided that he had hidden his sexuality, not only from strangers but also from his friends, due to feelings of self-loathing or a need for protection. In an extensive interview lasting over 40 hours, he admitted this and added, “My sexuality was a source of inner turmoil for me. However, fame made things even more complex.
In 1981, Reubens first introduced his character Pee-wee Herman on the prestigious improv stage, The Groundlings. As the character became more popular, he deliberately chose to maintain privacy about his private life.

Looking back, he stated, “I had come out of hiding, only to return later. I wasn’t striving for a career like Paul Reubens; instead, I was aiming for a career as Pee-wee Herman.
Reubens openly acknowledged having numerous hidden romantic connections, yet emphasized that his work obligations consistently came before his personal relationships.
After his 1991 arrest, Reubens began to move away from his Pee-wee character and instead took up various supporting roles in numerous projects during the 1990s.
He demonstrated his adaptability in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns (1992), the beloved cult movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as a regular role on Murphy Brown.
During the 2000s decade, he appeared in movies such as “Mystery Men” released in 1999 and “Blow” from 2001, both featuring actor Johnny Depp.
In his sixties, he reintroduced the character on stage with a revival of “The Pee-wee Herman Show” on Broadway in 2010, followed by a movie on Netflix in 2016.
Or, more casually:
Back in his sixties, he brought Pee-wee Herman out of retirement with a show on Broadway and later made a film about him for Netflix.
His final on-screen moment came in a cameo for Hulu’s Quiz Lady.
