In simpler terms, Paul O’Grady’s wife posted an emotional video, which was captured 20 minutes prior to his passing, showing a poignant moment from the late star.
The much-loved TV icon thanked his fans for their support just 20 minutes before he died.
On March 28, 2023, Paul, aged 67, unexpectedly passed away due to cardiac arrhythmia. Two years later, André Portasio, his surviving spouse, released a video message commemorating the event. In this message, he shared a recording of Paul discussing his book titled ‘Eddie Albert and the Incredible Animal Squad’, which had earned him an award previously.
In the video shared on Instagram on Friday, Paul expressed: “Hey everyone, this is Paul O’Grady. I simply wanted to extend my heartfelt gratitude for purchasing and voting for my book. I am beyond thrilled about my award, so a big thank you!
In the 1980s, the renowned figure, once a drag queen famous under the name Lily Savage, was also cherished for his deep affection towards creatures great and small. He often shared tender moments with his beloved corgi.
By the way, I’d like to introduce you to Eddie, my dog. Isn’t that right, Eddie? You may be familiar as you’re quite renowned. Interestingly, the character Butch from the book is modeled after this small canine. Today, you seem quite reserved, don’t you? Just a reminder, thank you again for everything.

‘I really appreciate it. Look after yourselves.’
In the title of the post, Andre, who wed the star of For the Love of Dogs in 2017, acknowledged that it’s often hard to accept that two years have gone by since his husband passed away. He fondly remembered him as a truly kind individual who valued his supporters.
He noted: “It’s amazing how our minds can protect us from the agony of loss during shocking moments. Today, my iPhone photos triggered a memory of a lost video I captured of Paul, which was recorded just 20 minutes before his tragic demise – a recording that turned out to be his final one on camera.
In this poignant instant, it’s clear that he was indeed a sincerely good man. He gratefully acknowledges each one of you for your backing of the book he couldn’t personally present at the awards event where it was recorded.
Two whole years have gone by since your departure, and yet it feels like yesterday. Throughout this time, you’ve been cherished by your loyal canine companions. Our hearts ache for you deeply, @paulogrady. May your heavenly birthday be filled with joy and love.
A few of Paul’s acquaintances and well-known peers commented below the post, expressing their tributes.
Presenter Gaby Roslin labeled the clip as both “unique” and “valuable,” while “EastEnders” star Michelle Collins expressed a sense of sadness upon acknowledging the delicate nature of existence itself.
She expressed: “This is shocking, incredibly sad. It really highlights the amazing individual he was. Life can be so delicate, and incidents like this remind us of the importance of cherishing every moment, just as Paul did. What a tragic loss; I wish there were more people like him around.
