It’s heartbreaking to share, but I’ve learned from a close friend that Paul O’Grady had confided in people he wasn’t expecting to be with us much longer. Apparently, he shared this quite a few weeks before his sudden passing. It just shows how bravely he was facing things, even while privately dealing with a lot. It’s a reminder to cherish every moment and reach out to loved ones – you never know what someone might be going through.
Paul O’Grady, known for his character Lily Savage, died at his home in Kent in March 2023 at the age of 67. His death was caused by an irregular heartbeat.
Paul’s close friend and producer, Malcolm Prince, has written a book about the star called ‘Not The Same Without You’. It was published in installments in the Daily and Sunday Mirror newspapers.
The article featured a heartbreaking account from people close to Paul, including Moira Stewart, who drove him home from the hospital.
While driving home, he told me he didn’t have much time left. I asked him to explain, and urged him to share what the doctors had told him, Malcom explained.
He seemed lost in thought. When I put my arm around him, he quietly said, “I don’t think I have much time left.”

He also shared difficult moments the star faced with Malcom, recalling a phone conversation where Paul confided that he was beginning to accept his limited time left.
I’ll always remember our conversation, especially how he ended it so calmly by saying, “I won’t be around for long, Malcolm.”
Paul, recalling a conversation with Malcolm weeks before his death, remembered discussing how unpredictable life is and how you never know what’s going to happen next, prompted by the loss of a mutual acquaintance.
Malcolm recently shared that he declined to get a defibrillator implanted near the end of his life because of his busy work schedule.
The celebrity was already committed to performing in the musical Annie and participating in a dog show, so they didn’t want to take any time off.
Malcolm also shared that the person didn’t want to return to the hospital for another procedure and the recovery time that would follow.
‘He wanted to get on and live his life, but also work. He didn’t want to let people down.’
Shortly before he passed away, Paul was hospitalized for a week at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent. He didn’t want to go back, and he let his daughter, Sharyn, know he was refusing further treatment with a defibrillator.

His manager and close friend, Joan Marshrons, explained that he was afraid of losing control. She believed this was why he refused the pacemaker – he didn’t want to be on camera or performing if it malfunctioned, as he’d have been deeply embarrassed.
Malcolm’s book shares honest and personal stories from people who knew him well, including his daughter Sharyn, close friends, coworkers, and famous acquaintances.
The book suggests Paul O’Grady might have struggled with an eating disorder, possibly due to the pressure to stay thin while performing as his drag persona, Lily Savage.
Vanessa White, who did his makeup, remembered that he couldn’t eat anything while he was playing the character of Lily.
