Paul Mescal breaks his silence after THAT awkward moment with Saoirse Ronan
As a seasoned journalist with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen countless interviews and panel discussions. However, the exchange between Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal on The Graham Norton Show was quite unique. It seemed like a friendly banter, albeit a bit awkward at times, but that’s showbiz for you!
I, a devoted admirer, am here to share some intriguing news about Paul Mescal. He’s finally spoken up following the somewhat uncomfortable incident with Saoirse Ronan on The Graham Norton Show last week.
On Friday, I found myself on a panel alongside Paul, Denzel Washington, and Eddie Redmayne, and my social media blew up after I spoke out about gender-based violence during our discussion.
In our conversation, Eddie, aged 42, shared that as part of his preparation for the forthcoming Peacock miniseries titled The Day of the Jackal, he was taught techniques to respond defensively with a phone if an attack should occur.
Later, Paul playfully remarked, “Who would even consider such a thing? In case of an actual attack on me, I certainly wouldn’t reach for my phone.
Graham pretended to talk on a phone as a way to ward off an attacker, saying, “Give me a moment,” to which Eddie responded, “You’ve got a really smart idea.
After some discussion in the conversation, Saoirse eventually got an opportunity to voice her thoughts and stated, ‘We often ponder these matters extensively as women.’
The brutally honest comment prompted a moment of silence from the panel.
She wondered if they agreed with her, addressing the group, which promptly responded with a thunderous applause from the audience in the studio.
In a recent interview, Paul, aged 28, discussed his appearance on the BBC program during the Gladiator II Australian premiere’s red carpet event held in Sydney.
In the upcoming Gladiator film sequel, the character played by Maximus (Paul) assumes the identity of Roman Emperor Lucius Verus, who is depicted as an adult in the original movie, where he was portrayed as a child, and Lucilla’s son in real life. This 2000 classic starring Russell Crowe earned an Oscar.
9Honey inquired about a statement Denzel made on The Graham Norton Show, where he expressed that Paul had given an outstanding performance in their latest film.
As a lifestyle expert, I confidently admit that those heartfelt words from Denzel left me with a profound emotional response.
He continued: ‘Because he’s just been both so generous with his talent, his performance in the film is just extraordinary but he’s been totally paternal in a non-condescending way entirely on this press tour.
It’s incredibly gratifying and thoughtful to receive something from someone so inherently gifted.
Paul was not asked directly about the moment with Saoirse.
It seems there was an interesting discussion that unfolded on The Graham Norton Show, with Paul and Saoirse finding themselves at the heart of the dialogue. This occurred due to some intriguing events or topics that were brought up during the show.
SAOIRSE SAYS ‘I’LL INTERRUPT YOU THERE’
The programme got off to a lively start as Eddie joked that Graham was pleased to have his ‘favourite line-up ever’.
Later, Graham highlighted that Paul seemed to be friendly with all those seated on the couch, inquiring about his ‘close relationship’ or ‘friendship’ with Saoirse.
In the course of our animated conversation, I playfully quipped, “I’ll interject, and then he suggests, ‘you go ahead and tell it!'” This was a nod to the bond that my husband (actor Jack Lowden) and he had formed online, which I affectionately term as an ‘online bromance.’
Paul mentioned: ‘When Normal People premiered, Jack sent me an incredibly sweet message about his role, which made me quite excited. Later, I had the chance to work with Saoirse, playing a married couple on set. Now, we’ve become the best of friends.’
Saoirse promptly chimed in, “We’re neighbors, neighbors right here in Cork!” Not missing a beat, Graham playfully quipped, “Well, I guess that means we can’t afford to spend any time in Ireland then!
On the show, Paul and Denzel discussed Gladiator II. After wrapping up their conversation, Paul moved to sit beside his close friend Saoirse, offering her a warm embrace.
SAOIRSE TELLS PAUL ‘DON’T LAUGH’
Yet it was clear Paul was in high spirits and just wanting to joke around when it came to Saoirse promoting her new film, Blitz, with Graham warning: ‘Paul behave, because Saoirse’s up now.’
Despite his caution, it seemed to fall on deaf ears, as Paul found himself struggling to suppress his laughter during Saoirse’s subsequent interview.
The gentlemen on the dais were talking about undergoing body changes for their acting parts, with Graham eventually focusing his conversation towards Saoirse.
He inquired about the training regimen she followed for her leading character in the 2011 action thriller Hanna, in which she portrays a young girl trained as an assassin by her former CIA agent father (played by Eric Bana).
In that instant when an image of Saoirse appeared on the screen during the movie, the boys erupted in laughter spontaneously. This amused response led Saoirse to caution them with a request to suppress their laughter.
Looking at the photo, Paul kept laughing and said, “Check out her!” To which Saoirse replied, “That’s a renowned movie; she just took down a deer.
Interrupting her, Paul laughed, ‘of course’, as Saoirse warned again, ‘stop laughing Paul…’
SAOIRSE SAYS ‘YOU’VE HAD YOUR TIME TALKING’
In an attempt to shift the conversation topic, Graham posed this question to Paul: “By any chance, have you watched Hanna? I think it’s a fantastic movie!” To which, the actor of Normal People admitted that he hadn’t seen it yet.
As Saoirse was about to talk more, Paul interjected humorously, “I’d love to dress up as you for Halloween!”, which seemed to annoy Saoirse noticeably, causing her to respond sharply, “Alright, you’ve had enough speaking.
In an attempt to ease the palpable tension, at the age of 69, I found myself subtly retreating into my seat and humorously remarked, “I always knew to keep a safe distance!” as Saoirse playfully countered with, “no no no, we’ve got nothing but love for each other.
SAORISE SHUTS DOWN JOKES ABOUT VIOLENCE
The tense moment happened just minutes before Saoirse stunned the men into silence with her comment on gender-based violence.
In our conversation, Eddie, age 42, shared that while preparing for his role in The Day of the Jackal, a forthcoming Peacock miniseries, he learned techniques for responding with a phone if assaulted.
Laughing heartily, Paul quipped, “Who on earth would consider that in such a situation? If anyone were to attack me, I certainly wouldn’t reach for my phone!
Laughing loudly, Graham feigned talking on a phone as a means of keeping someone at bay, asking, “Hold on for a moment?”, to which Eddie responded, “You certainly make a valid point.
After being given an opportunity to speak in the conversation, Saoirse stated, “It’s something that women often ponder.
The brutally honest comment prompted a moment of silence from the panel.
I believe we’re on the same page here, everyone? This question seemed to resonate strongly with our studio audience, judging by the thunderous applause I received in response.
BUT THEY ARE THE BEST OF FRIENDS
Despite an uncomfortable exchange during the program, Saoirse and Paul have no lingering ill feelings towards each other.
Indeed, it’s true that the Irish actors developed a close bond following their collaboration in the 2023 sci-fi movie Foe, portraying a married couple on screen.
While on the promotional circuit for the movie, Saoirse mentioned that the role helped deepen their bond, saying, “We were acquaintances of sorts prior, mostly through mutual friends.
Ever since we wrapped up that movie, a deep bond has formed between us that transcends the typical Hollywood acquaintanceship. I can confidently say that we’ve forged an authentic friendship – one that’s not just a product of the silver screen.
As for my extraordinary co-star, Saoirse, let me tell you, she’s an unparalleled actor I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside. Her energy is boundless, never flagging. Plus, I’m proud to call her not just a colleague, but a cherished friend as well.
At present, Saoirse is actively marketing her upcoming war drama movie titled Blitz. This film is scheduled for a theater release on November 1, followed by its streaming debut on Apple TV+ on November 22.
In addition to the main cast, you’ll find Elliott Heffernan, Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clémentine, Kathy Burke, Paul Weller, and Stephen Graham gracing the screen in this film as well.
The movie ‘Blitz,’ helmed by Steven McQueen, narrates the tales of various London residents as they navigate through the tumultuous period of World War II bombings in London. This is a brief summary of the film’s plot.
Saoirse plays the role of Rita, a mother nurturing her nine-year-old son George (Heffernan), during challenging times.
