Under the direction of Chloé Zhao, a new movie was unveiled at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival this week. Critics have been raving about it, with many praising Buckley’s powerful portrayal of Agnes, William Shakespeare’s wife (played by Mescal).

The movie traces the bond between Agnes and William Shakespeare, focusing on how they cope with the unexpected death of their eleven-year-old son named Hamnet.

In addition to the main cast of Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, and David Wilmot, this production boasts esteemed producers Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes, who lend their legendary expertise to the project.

After making its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the movie Hamnet has been creating a lot of buzz for potential Oscars, but it won’t hit US theaters until November 27th. Sadly, UK audiences have a longer wait ahead with Hamnet set to be released on January 9th, 2026.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Zhao shared what led her to the project. She was astounded by how immersive and sensory the book is, and added that it’s written in a style remarkably similar to how she would edit.

“Maggie has a very unique way of writing. It feels like images are being edited as I’m reading.”

Hamnet is set to hit movie theaters across the United States on November 27, 2025. The film’s UK debut is planned for January 9, 2026.
