Paul McCartney makes a cheeky enquiry to Tina Knowles about her famous daughter Beyonce as she prepares to kick off UK leg of her tour
On the last evening of her talk series, Tina Knowles was questioned by Paul McCartney about her experiences raising superstar daughters Beyoncé and Solange.
82-year-old legend Paul McCartney, through his daughter Stella McCartney (a renowned figure in fashion), posed a question during an event he was chairing, which took place at London’s Southbank Centre on Wednesday evening. The matriarch personally requested Stella to take on this role.
Stella, aged 53, held back her father’s query until the end, confessing that she hadn’t initially intended to bring it up, yet found herself inevitably prompted to inquire about it.
She shared: “I told my father today that I called him, expressing how extremely nervous I was. It may sound strange, but usually, I’m the one asking questions, this isn’t really my role – I was having a conversation with Tina Knowles. And he reassured me, saying ‘don’t worry, just be yourself. You’ll do great.’
‘And I was like, no dad, I’m the one asking the questions’ and he went ”ah”.

I asked him if he had a question for her since he is my father. His question was, ‘What’s it like being the mother of Beyoncé and Solange?’
Tina, aged 72, responded with enthusiasm, “It’s marvelous, but it really upsets me when people speak negatively about my children. At those moments, I just feel like defending them,” which earned a standing ovation from the crowd.
At the Matriarch: An Evening with Tina Knowles and Guests event, Stella generously bestowed a black dress from her fashion line upon Tina as a present. The two women clearly admired each other’s esteem during the gathering.
Tina openly confessed that she had worn a pair of Stella McCartney stretch jeans until they were virtually worn out, all while showcasing her successful daughters in the public eye – a style that Stella herself claims to have ‘originated’. Meanwhile, the designer expressed an interest in learning parenting strategies from Tina, particularly when it comes to navigating challenges with teenage daughters.
Stella has two of them, Bailey, 19, and Reilly, 15, as well as sons Miller, 20, and Beckett, 17.
In a somewhat unusual move, Tina seldom referred to Beyoncé or mentioned her partner Jay-Z at all, but did express her thoughts when reminiscing about her teenage years and how she urged Beyoncé to step out of her shell and be more adventurous, as she was quite reserved back then.
Tina has also expressed similar sentiments about Kelly Rowland, 44, whom she views as one of her four daughters (the other three being Angie Beyince, 48, her songwriter daughter, and Solange, 38, her second biological daughter). Solange, she mentions, didn’t need any persuasion to maintain a social life.
Tina stated: ‘Beyonce and Kelly were not keen on attending parties; they preferred staying in instead. However, I suggested, “Go ahead, party, let loose for a while.’

‘With Solange I didn’t have to do that so much…’
On dealing with Solange in the present day, Tina says she’s only just learned how to deal with her.
She shared that she values personal space with Solange, and it took some time for her to grasp that she shouldn’t force herself on her. If Solange doesn’t reach out to her today, she understands that it’s not appropriate for her to insist, “Solange, you should get in touch with me.
She prefers some personal independence – she’s unique in her own way. She requires living her life on her own terms and making choices that suit her.
Stella and Tina had a mutual connection concerning breast cancer, as Tina herself was diagnosed in 2024, and unfortunately, Stella’s mother Linda passed away from the disease back in 1998.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but reminisce about the moment my dear Solange playfully teased me, “You always wanted small boobs, mom,” in a bid to find a ‘silver lining’ amidst the challenging news that followed. This lighthearted jest was a poignant attempt at humor, coming after I missed a mammogram appointment during the pandemic, which ultimately led to my diagnosis.
Afterward, she made an impassioned plea for women to schedule regular check-ups, a suggestion that was enthusiastically supported by Stella. She added that she, along with her sisters and closest female friends, make it a tradition to undergo their annual checks together on International Women’s Day each year.
Tina said: ‘Go get your mammograms, don’t put it off.’
Tina further discussed her divorce from Mathew, Beyoncé’s father, in 2011 after 31 years of marriage. She emphasized that he was a ‘decent man’. She also talked about her close bond with her brother Johnny who is gay, and how she took on the role as Destiny’s Child’s stylist following an unexpected shopping trip at a roadside store in Jamaica during an emergency situation.
On the latter, she explains: ‘They lost their clothes so I was just panicking.
We visited an outdoor location by the road, where I procured a camouflage material, then I sliced it into pieces and transformed it into a garment – be it a dress or some other creation.
Eventually, the day arrived, and I discovered that I had forgotten to buy pants for Kelly. She mentioned she wasn’t fond of that particular skirt either. Spontaneously, I ran into Pras from The Fugees, and I asked him to hand over his pants to Kelly. And so, they went out and did just that.
Following the conclusion of the event, Wyclef Jean approached the girls and inquired, “Who did your styling?” To which Beyoncé replied, “My mom did.” Impressed, he stated, “She should style you all the time,” and that’s how I began working as the stylist for Destiny’s Child.
