Paul Di’Anno’s family says Iron Maiden alum died of a ‘tear in the sac’ around his heart
As a long-time aficionado of heavy metal music, I find myself deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Di’Anno, a legend whose powerful voice and energetic stage presence left an indelible mark on the genre. His untimely demise at 66 has undoubtedly robbed us of more incredible performances that would have continued to inspire generations of fans.
The reason behind the death of former Iron Maiden member Paul Di’Anno, who passed away recently at the age of 66, has now been disclosed.
At the time of Di’Anno’s passing, his long-term record label, Conquest Music, announced that he had been battling multiple health problems without providing additional information. However, on Monday, representatives for Di’Anno disclosed that they had received approval from his family to disclose the findings from his autopsy.
The sisters, Cheryl and Michelle, stated on Facebook: ‘Essentially, there was a tear in the sac surrounding his heart, leading to blood accumulation from the main aorta artery. This incident stopped his heart. Unfortunately, Paul’s death appears to have been swift and likely painless.’ May he find peace.
Alongside the post was a picture of Di’Anno’s friends and family, who over the weekend put on a show in his honor at Underworld Camden, a live-music venue in London. “With an impressive musical performance, they bid a fitting goodbye to their friend through music.
On October 21st, Di’Anno passed away at his residence in Salisbury, England. Prior to his demise, Di’Anno had been battling health issues due to a compromised immune system following a sepsis infection nearly a decade ago, as stated by his family and record label on the same day.
In spite of facing significant health challenges that required him to perform using a wheelchair, Paul Di’Anno still managed to delight his global fanbase with over 100 shows since 2023. We at Conquest Music are honored to have been part of his artist family and encourage his countless fans to raise a toast in his remembrance.
Subsequently, Iron Maiden’s band members and fellow managers expressed their heartfelt sorrow upon hearing about Di’Anno’s demise.
The band acknowledged Paul’s significant impact on Iron Maiden, guiding us along our musical journey spanning nearly five decades. His innovative role as a frontman and vocalist, both live and on our early records, will be deeply missed not only by us, but by fans worldwide,” they said.
From 1978 to 1981, Di’Anno was part of Iron Maiden, where he contributed to their first self-titled album in 1980 and the subsequent “Killers” album in 1981. However, his tenure with the band ended when he was dismissed and was subsequently replaced by Bruce Dickinson, who has been their lead vocalist since. Later on, Di’Anno went on to front several other bands, including Killers, Battlezone, and Warhorse.
In 2023, the artist disclosed that Iron Maiden assisted him in covering his medical expenses related to a lung abscess. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude for this assistance, indicating that he will always remain thankful.
