Patrick Dempsey went to the BAFTAs in London on Sunday, shortly after the sad passing of his Grey’s Anatomy colleague, Eric Dane, who was 53 years old.
Family members confirmed his death on Thursday, just under a year after he publicly shared his diagnosis of ALS.
Sixty-year-old Patrick was joined on the red carpet by his 24-year-old daughter, Talula Fyfe Dempsey, following a moving remembrance of a close friend and colleague who recently passed away.
He looked sophisticated and elegant in a classic black tuxedo, paired with a crisp white shirt and a velvet bow tie.
Patrick wore sunglasses and slicked back his gray hair as he walked with his daughter, who looked stunning in a black dress.
The actor and wife Jillian Fink are also parents to twin sons Darby and Sullivan, 19.
Patrick shared that he last talked to Eric around a week ago and wants to cherish the happy memories they shared.
Eric became famous for playing many different characters in Hollywood, most notably as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed ‘McSteamy,’ on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy. Meanwhile, Patrick became well-known for his role as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd on the same show.
Patrick shared on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Friday that he’ll always cherish the happiness he brought to others and will continue to celebrate that impact.
He shared that he was deeply saddened by the news he read that morning. He found it difficult to express how upset he was, and particularly felt for the man’s children.
He was confined to bed and had difficulty swallowing, causing his quality of life to decline quickly.
He was a truly hilarious person and a delight to work with. I want to remember him for the joy he brought to every set – he always made things fun.
He was hilarious and a joy to work with – we clicked right away. I’ll never forget the first time I saw him on set. He walked out of the bathroom, towel around his waist, looking incredible. It was intimidating – he instantly made everyone else feel a little self-conscious about their appearance!
From the moment we connected, it just clicked. It wasn’t about trying to one-up each other at all, which was amazing. It was pure, genuine respect – I felt it, and I know they did too. It was just… perfect.
He was incredibly bright, and I’ll always cherish the fun times we shared. He brought so much joy to others, and it’s a real loss for those of us who will miss him.
I was so moved by what he did to shine a light on this terrible illness. Seeing his final days really hit home for me – it’s a powerful reminder that we should all cherish every single day and live it to the fullest, like it might be our last.
With so much hardship and sadness in the world, it’s important to remember to appreciate every moment we have.
Patrick emphasized the importance of prioritizing family, pursuing positive activities, and focusing on kindness, love, and service to others – values he believes are truly important.
Given the current state of leadership globally, and particularly the issues with the American government, it’s more important than ever to be kind and respectful to those around us.
This year’s awards ceremony, hosted by Alan Cumming, will celebrate the biggest films of the year and welcome stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Jacob Elordi, and Michael B. Jordan.
Guests arriving on the red carpet will enjoy music from DJ Neev Spencer, who hosts on Magic FM. Clara Amfo and Ali Plumb will be reporting live from outside the famous London venue.
The show will feature a star-studded lineup of guest hosts, including Aimee Lou Wood, Alicia Vikander, Cillian Murphy, Ethan Hawke, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sadie Sink, and Stormzy.
The Royal Festival Hall will host appearances by stars like Kerry Washington, Minnie Driver, Monica Bellucci, and Regé-Jean Page, plus many others.
I’m so excited for the entertainment lined up! It’s going to be amazing – especially because KPop group Demon Hunters are performing their hit track ‘Golden’ for the very first time outside of the US! And it’s not just any performance – it’s sung by the incredible voices of JAE, AUDREYNUNA, and REI AMI, who are the vocalists for HUNTR/X. I’ve been waiting for this moment!
