Pat McAfee identifies himself as the ‘somebody’ who ’embarrassed’ John Mellencamp at Pacers-Knicks game
In simpler terms, on Thursday, famous rock artist John Mellencamp, who hails from Indiana, expressed regret and apologized, not just for himself, but for many Hoosiers (residents of Indiana), due to the unsportsmanlike conduct exhibited by some fans during the Pacers’ home victory against the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals a couple of days prior.
Despite the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer not explicitly mentioning a specific Indiana sports enthusiast in his pre-Game 5 post, it appears that he was referring to well-known ESPN personality, Pat McAfee, implicitly.
As a die-hard movie fan, let me share my take on an unfolding event: “I felt quite awkward when someone, whose authority remains unclear to me, singled out some fans who traveled all the way from New York, cheering for their team and, indirectly, ours. The crowd responded with boos. I’d call that far from the warmth and kindness Hoosiers are known for. In simpler terms, it was an act of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Television
In the ongoing story of Teddi Mellencamp’s battle with cancer, her father, John Mellencamp, is taking steps to ensure that he understands her wishes regarding burial location.
After Mellencamp shared his statement, McAfee later reposted it on platform X, acknowledging that he was the person who encouraged Pacers fans to act in that way.
“I am ‘somebody,’” McAfee wrote.
On Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Mellencamp and McAfee were both present. The Pacers triumphed over the Knicks 130-121, extending their series lead to 3-1. During a break in the fourth quarter, McAfee addressed the crowd and pointed out notable Knicks fans Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, and Timothée Chalamet (who were all there). He then motivated the Pacers supporters to “make sure these celebrities return to New York with their ears ringing from the cheers!
Later that same night on X, Stiller commented about the situation, stating that he believed McAfee was merely “messing around” and that the fans he interacted with at the arena were “amazingly great and really cool.
Mellencamp, however, was not happy with the shenanigans.

Sports
On his ESPN program, Pat McAfee claims that some higher power, either divine or universal, instructed him to cease discussing basketball sensation Caitlin Clark. This seems to be following his comment referring to her as a ‘white b-word.’
Originally called Johnny Cougar, the singer expressed that he hadn’t felt a sense of pride being a resident of Indiana all these years. On behalf of many fellow Hoosiers, I’d like to offer an apology for our less than admirable conduct. I believe it’s important to note that the Pacers were not involved in this unfortunate incident.
John Mellencamp seems to be making a subtle nod towards McAfee, who is both a commentator and an occasional wrestler in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Notably, “Friday Night SmackDown” is one of WWE’s flagship television programs.
It’s puzzling that Mellencamp chose to express his dissatisfaction so much time after the event took place. It could be that he intends to attend Thursday night’s game at Madison Square Garden, where his Pacers are hoping to secure their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000.
One person who won’t be there is McAfee, despite a friendly invite from Stiller.
