Passing On Destiny and Guitar Hero Among Some of the 'Worst Choices' Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Has Made, He Says

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can’t help but reminisce about some of the games that got away. Phil Spencer’s recent admission about passing on Destiny and Guitar Hero has struck a chord with me.

Microsoft’s Xbox leader, Phil Spencer, openly acknowledged that not acquiring Destiny and Guitar Hero rank among his most regrettable decisions concerning video games. It’s clear that Bungie’s first-person shooter series remains significant, while at its peak, Harmonix’s Guitar Hero was a cultural sensation before it eventually lost popularity.

Spencer expressed during a ‘Story Time with Phil Spencer’ session at PAX West (as reported by Eurogamer), “I have a multitude of conflicting feelings and tales regarding Destiny. Of course, Bungie was under Microsoft when I joined Xbox, and I worked alongside Alex Seropian and Jason Jones in the same building we were in Redmond. I gained immense knowledge simply by being near Bungie.”

Despite working closely with Bungie when they were under Xbox, Spencer admitted that he wasn’t immediately drawn to Destiny; it wasn’t until the ‘House of Wolves’ expansion was released that he found it appealing. Interestingly, both Destiny and Guitar Hero were published by Activision, and later in 2022, Bungie was bought by Sony for approximately $3.6 billion.

Spencer expressed his regret when he declined the opportunity to try Guitar Hero, stating it was something along the lines of: “I found their proposal quite intriguing – a team came down to Redmond presenting an idea to create plastic guitars that would connect to consoles and offer songs for you to play as if you were Simon. I recall my response being something like, ‘Really? Are we seriously considering this to be successful?'”

“Spencer remarked with a chuckle, ‘I hear it turned into quite an excellent game.’ He then shared, ‘I don’t dwell on regrets, though some might see that as a flaw of mine. After all, there were so many games I chose not to play. However, I prefer to focus on the positives and appreciate… Indeed, what this team at Bungie has achieved is simply amazing.'”
