- The result makes PSG only the second team to retain the trophy in the modern era after Real Madrid, confirming the French side as the dominant force in European football under Luis Enrique
Paris Saint-Germain won the UEFA Champions League again, defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The match, played at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, had ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhães missed the deciding penalty, securing PSG’s victory. This makes PSG the first team since Real Madrid (from 2016-2018) to win the Champions League in consecutive years, solidifying their place as one of Europe’s top clubs.
As an Arsenal fan, I was buzzing when we scored so early! It all happened so quickly – Marquinhos cleared it, it bounced off Trossard, and suddenly Havertz was through on goal, smashing it into the net in just the sixth minute. It was a terrible start for PSG, going behind to a team known for its incredible defense. Honestly, we completely lived up to our reputation as a top defensive side, really shutting down Kvaratskhelia on the wing – he couldn’t get anything going. PSG had a lot of the ball, but they just couldn’t break us down. It’s crazy to think they attacked 32 times in the first half, and we only attacked three times – but we were so solid at the back!
The game changed when a foul by Cristhian Mosquera on Kvaratskhelia led to a penalty, which Dembélé scored to tie the game – his eighth goal in the competition. This immediately gave PSG the advantage. Arsenal tried to push forward, substituting Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyökeres for Mosquera and Martin Ødegaard, but this left them vulnerable to counter-attacks. Kvaratskhelia nearly scored on one such attack, hitting the post with a left-footed shot. Late substitute Bradley Barcola then shot over the bar with the final attempt of the game. Extra time was a tense and tiring affair, and Arsenal only managed one shot on target throughout the entire 120 minutes before the final whistle blew.
During the penalty shootout, Eberechi Eze initially missed a penalty for Arsenal, but Raya then saved a shot from Nuno Mendes, keeping the score tied. Lucas Beraldo, who came on as a substitute in extra time, scored the winning penalty for PSG. This meant Gabriel had to score to keep the match going, but he shot over the bar. Marquinhos then lifted the trophy, marking PSG’s second year in a row winning the title.
This victory solidifies PSG’s position as a major force in modern football. Once seen as a wealthy club that didn’t quite live up to its potential, PSG has now established itself as a true dynasty under coach Luis Enrique. He has an impressive record, winning all six penalty shootouts he’s overseen as PSG coach and 12 out of 13 single-match club finals throughout his career. “This win feels even better than last year because we knew Arsenal would be a tough opponent,” Enrique stated. “It’s a fantastic achievement for the club and the city, and we earned this over the entire season. The final was a hard-fought battle.”
Arsenal’s loss is particularly painful considering the fantastic season they’ve had. Just eleven days after winning their first Premier League title in over two decades, they completed their European run without a defeat in regular or extra time – only falling in the penalty shootout. This was their second Champions League final, and they fought a close match against one of Europe’s top teams, pushing them all the way to the final penalty. Declan Rice described the loss as ‘gutting’ and ‘devastating,’ but emphasized how far the team has come and that they gave everything they had, ultimately acknowledging that penalty shootouts are unpredictable.
