As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours exploring the final frontier and boldly going where no one has gone before, I must say that the recent changes in the streaming landscape have left me feeling somewhat like Captain Kirk lost in a strange new world.


The streaming platform once known for its claim as “Star Trek’s home” no longer holds that title truthfully. The shift began when Paramount+ decided to cancel Star Trek: Prodigy in April 2023. Consequently, they have taken down all ten of the original Star Trek movies, with six from The Original Series and four from The Next Generation eras.

As a fan, I’m always on the lookout for my favorite films. Here’s where you can catch them: MGM offers a platform with a monthly subscription of $6.99 after a week-long free trial, or an annual subscription for $58.99. If you prefer a one-time payment, you can rent these movies on Amazon Prime Video. However, the main advantage of subscribing to a streaming channel like MGM is that it eliminates additional costs when you want to watch the series or films you cherish.

Given that Star Trek is being distributed across various streaming platforms nowadays, it seems plausible that Paramount+ [or Skydance] might opt for exclusive licensing of certain series down the line. In days gone by, several Trek series could be found on Prime and Netflix. Evidently, these were profitable agreements, but Paramount+ aimed to have all Star Trek content in one location. Unfortunately, this strategy hasn’t been successful for the channel. Consequently, you might need to search extensively when seeking a specific Star Trek series or movie to stream in the future.
