Paramount+ has made a decision about the future of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem promising for fans of the series.
Production has finished on Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. This is the twelfth series in the Star Trek franchise, and it originally launched on Paramount+ earlier this year. The streaming service renewed the show for a second season before the first season even finished airing.
What is the latest Star Trek: Starfleet Academy update?
After its first season concluded on March 12th, Paramount+ has decided not to renew Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for a third season. The show will end after its current second season.
Okay, so the first season got a pretty good response from critics – Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 87% score, which is solid. But honestly, regular viewers didn’t seem to love it as much, giving it only a 51%. And it didn’t really make a splash on the streaming charts either; it wasn’t breaking any viewership records, that’s for sure. It just didn’t quite become the streaming hit some people hoped for.
The show sparked mixed reactions, and some viewers didn’t connect with its story about growing up. Although the streaming service didn’t say why it was cancelled so quickly, it’s likely that not enough people were watching and the overall feedback wasn’t positive.
CBS Studios and Paramount+ released a joint statement. It reads:
We’re thrilled with the dedication, enthusiasm, and imagination that made ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ possible. The show featured a fresh group of characters alongside some returning favorites, and it broadened the ‘Star Trek’ world in really interesting ways. We can’t wait to release the second and final season and continue to recognize the hard work and achievements of everyone involved.
Set in the 32nd century, after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows a new group of cadets as they train to become Starfleet officers. The series stars Holly Hunter as Nahla Ake, along with Sandro Rosta as Caleb Mir, Karim Diané as Jay-Den Kraag, and other talented actors.
Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, who oversaw the show as co-showrunners and executive producers, have confirmed that the current season will be the last. They shared that they’re currently finishing up the second season and are incredibly proud of the work the team has done. They promise a satisfying conclusion for viewers when the new episodes air.
