Paradise Season 2: Gary Shoots Ennis Due To His One Major Obsession

In Season 2, Episode 5 of Paradise, a new character named Gary, a mailman, shockingly shot his friend Ennis. This act was motivated by his feelings for someone connected to Xavier Collins. The episode initially presented Gary as a kind, solitary figure who, along with Ennis, was preparing for a potential apocalypse by trying to build a survival group.

Gary spoke with Xavier, who had recently become a father with Annie, to explain his past connection to Xavier’s wife, Teri. Gary revealed they had been friends during the height of the apocalyptic outbreak, and that Teri had been taken days before Xavier joined their group. He also blamed Ennis for giving away their location, leading to Teri’s capture. But the episode ultimately revealed the true story behind what happened.

In Season 2, Episode 5 of Paradise, Gary shot and killed Ennis during their return trip from a survivor group’s train departure to Colorado. This happened after Ennis bluntly told Gary to prepare for the likely loss of Teri, leading to a betrayal where Gary killed his close friend.

Driven by his obsession with Teri, Gary resorted to violence, determined to control her and keep her with him at any cost. In Season 2 of Paradise, what made Gary particularly frightening was his talent for deception. He convincingly played the role of a lonely, ordinary man, fooling everyone – even Xavier – and allowing him to coldly kill those who trusted him.

The latest episode of Paradise made things more upsetting by portraying Ennis as the bad guy for much of the time. Although he began as someone viewers didn’t immediately like, the episode showed Ennis developing into a caring teammate, which contrasted sharply with Gary, whose true, selfish motives were slowly revealed.

Fortunately, Bean saw Gary’s treacherous and violent act. It seems he then told Teri what Gary had done.

We don’t know where Teri went after Gary murdered her, but she likely joined the group of survivors. They were all trying to reach the underground bunker in Colorado, so it makes sense she’d seek safety with them. It also explains why Gary wanted them eliminated – he believed they were responsible for Teri going missing, as he told Xavier.

Why Gary Is the Perfect Paradise Season 2 Villain Hiding In Plain Sight

Season 2 of Paradise features many complicated characters, and Gary stands out as a compelling villain. The show gradually reveals his hidden, darker nature, making him especially effective.

Gary comes across as both understanding and insincere, and his desperate, obsessive behavior makes him a dangerous character who feels he has nothing to lose—he just wants to be with the woman he loves. He’s a master manipulator, convincingly tricking Xavier, as well as his old friends Crystal and Jackie, into thinking Ennis was the bad guy, when it was actually him all along.

Gary admitted to Xavier that he loved Teri, even though she didn’t feel the same way. However, he seemed to try and manipulate Xavier by pretending to be completely honest, hoping to gain his trust.

Following Annie’s death in Paradise Season 2, Episode 4, many viewers believe Xavier anticipated this and may be planning ahead of Gary. Xavier previously expressed his distrust of Gary, knowing Gary wasn’t allowed to read to Bean in the bunker – suggesting Teri is cautious about who she trusts. Hopefully, Xavier will soon discover that Gary isn’t who he seems.

Ultimately, Paradise cleverly established Gary as a captivating villain. His malicious actions weren’t simply evil, but rooted in very human weaknesses – specifically, his fixation on Teri. This allowed him to easily control others, turning them into unwitting accomplices before ultimately betraying and killing them.
