Pamela Anderson’s son reveals why her Baywatch typecasting caused him to push her to reinvent her career

Pamela Anderson's son reveals why her Baywatch typecasting caused him to push her to reinvent her career

As a fervent admirer of resilience and the power of reinvention, I find myself deeply moved by the inspiring narrative of Pamela Anderson. Her journey from sex symbol to respected actress is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s a testament to her courage, determination, and the transformative capacity of the human spirit.

Brandon Thomas Lee, the son of Pamela Anderson, expressed that he’s dedicated to helping his mom change her image from a sex symbol to a person, encouraging her pursuit of her dreams instead.

27-year-old Brandon shared with Variety insights on his mother’s, aged 57, professional transformation and changing public perception. He expressed his desire to assist her personally in achieving this new phase in her career.

He shared with the media that his goal, on a personal level, was to provide the same chances for his mother that she had given him during his childhood.

“She goes to great lengths for my sake. She proved to be an exceptional mother when she appeared. At some stage in your existence, you transform into a guardian,” he noted as an additional detail.

Brandon, who manages the family’s business matters, expressed a desire for his mother to ‘get the chance’ to ‘reach success in the profession she aims for.’

Originally known for her appearances in Playboy and later famous as CJ Parker from Baywatch, Pamela eventually changed the course of her acting career, earning herself a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actress category for her portrayal in The Last Showgirl.

Pamela has two sons with ex-husband Tommy Lee: Brandon and Dylan, 26.

For the first time, Pamela has been nominated for a Golden Globe award, this time for her role in The Last Showgirl.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but sing praises about the extraordinary performance I witnessed from our shining star in “The Last Showgirl.” She breathed life into Shelley, the once radiant Las Vegas showgirl, under the skillful guidance of director Gia Coppola. It was a spectacle to behold!

She stars alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Brenda Song, Billie Lourd, Kiernan Shipka and Dave Bautista.

In the Best Actress – Drama category of the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, Pamela will be competing against Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, and Fernanda Torres.

Following her nomination, the star conveyed an uplifting thought to the public: ‘I want to acknowledge The Last Showgirl Family, my own family, and my dedicated colleagues for this lovely nomination. It’s never too late to nurture dreams, begin anew, or remain open to new opportunities – not everyone is as fortunate.’

Adding: ‘I wish everyone my love and thanks while I navigate this new exciting chapter.’

Brandon shared with Variety that from a young age, he understood it was his role to establish a solid foundation for his family and serve as their rallying point.

I must confess, I could have easily devised a plan to capitalize on the public perception of Pamela as a symbol of sexuality for financial gain. However, I chose not to, for it would have compromised my mother’s contentment and peace, which is far more valuable to me than any fleeting monetary success.

Brandon clarified that his aim was for his mother to have the chance, regardless of the outcome, to attain success in her desired career area.

The aim was to redefine her career’s perspective, moving away from a male-centric viewpoint towards one grounded in a woman’s perspective. She successfully accomplished this by penning her memoir titled “Love, Pamela” and producing the documentary named “Pamela, A Love Story.

He informed Variety that it was necessary for us to pause, maintain our stance firmly, as we prioritized working on the memoir and documentary over other prospects that didn’t serve to illuminate, clarify, or strengthen her image.

Before publishing her memoir and documentary, Pamela was often seen as an object whose career catered to male viewers, he remarked. However, following the release of these projects, there was a significant change in perception – people started seeing her as a person rather than just an object, which led to a fresh introduction of her to the world.

He pointed out that the main purpose of the documentary was to demonstrate her versatility in handling various acting roles, rather than to validate her as an actress or for viewers to become familiar with her.

He desired his mother to publish both the book and the documentary so she could take control of her own story and openly share it with the global community.

Brandon expressed that upon reading the script for The Last Showgirl, it felt like a refreshing change, as he seldom encountered such projects being presented to his mother.

He remembered he had a meeting with Gia and Robert Schwartzman, the project producer, to confirm it was going to be a comeback show for his mother and ensure they could rely on them to handle this special occasion.

Brandon shared that upon handing over the script to his mother, she quickly read through it and expressed enthusiasm for participating in the project, mentioning that the character Shelley resonated deeply with her.

Pamela has previously mentioned that the Hulu project – Pamela and Tommy – which starred Lily James and Sebastian Stan – was ‘salt on the wound’ – via her interview with Variety last year – as it was an incredibly painful time in her life.

2022 saw the launch of a project centered around an unlawfully circulated and supposedly stolen sex tape involving both her and Tommy.

In an interview with Variety back in 2023, Pamela expressed that the “Pam & Tommy” series overshadowed some of her own achievements, such as her stellar performance as Roxy Hart in Broadway’s production of Chicago during the same period when the show was streaming on Hulu.

She stated, “It was truly surprising. Tommy likely found it amusing. I recall Tommy writing me a note saying, ‘Please, let this not cause you pain as it did before, since I learned you’ve been having trouble facing this situation again.’ This was because he got wind of the kids talking about my difficulty in revisiting this topic. In my opinion, he wasn’t depicted favorably. All I can say is that I won’t watch it,” she expressed to the media outlet.

‘It’s like pouring salt into the wound… Your public apology is long overdue.’

When inquired about the series by Variety, Brandon mentioned that although he had no personal opinions on it, he felt that it sparked more conversations around his mother and aided in fulfilling his objective of supporting his mother in achieving her aspirations.

Adding that ‘we just tend to take what we see and move forward, and that’s my thought on it.’

The Golden Globes airs on Sunday, January 5th, 2025.
