Pamela Anderson insists women are ‘so much more than animals between the sheets’ as former Baywatch bombshell dismisses her sex symbol status and reveals why she’s really chosen to stop wearing makeup

As someone who found fame in the ’90s, I was often seen as the epitome of a pin-up girl. However, Pamela Anderson openly confessed that she detested the objectification that came with being labeled a sex symbol, following her success on Baywatch.

The Canadian actress gained widespread recognition due to her portrayal of C.J Parker, a character known for her curvaceous figure, in David Hasselhoff’s popular TV show focusing on the athletic lifeguards of Los Angeles County.

However, at age 58, Anderson feels that being labeled among the world’s most attractive women could potentially lead to an excessive amount of unwanted male attention, which she refers to as a “tricky path.

In her recent appearance on the How To Fail With Elizabeth Day podcast, she expressed that she dislikes being labeled a ‘sex symbol’. She added that while everyone might desire to be attractive within their relationships, being considered ‘sexy’ by the world feels strange and unappealing to her.

The event garnered more notice than I preferred, yet I hesitate to express my discomfort as it may seem like whining. However, I cannot deny the feeling that such exposure opens up a potentially precarious path where increased attention is inevitable.

Over the past few years, this actress has chosen to buck traditional norms by appearing at prominent public functions without wearing makeup. She firmly believes that reinventing herself and adopting a more demure, non-sexualized image is crucial as she moves into her mature years.

She mentioned that there are moments when it feels intimidating, considering her age and choosing not to wear makeup, as she progresses in her career. For her, embracing a more natural look is crucial in her personal journey.

I aim to stretch my abilities and express myself in diverse forms, because women are multifaceted. We’re not simply the ‘wild animal’ when it comes to intimacy.

In her late fifties, Anderson has garnered widespread acclaim for choosing not to wear makeup at various public functions, which began with an impactful appearance at Paris Fashion Week in September 2023.

People approach me everywhere – on the street, in the grocery store, even while flying on a plane – and they express their admiration for the decision I’ve made,” she said.

I find it resonates strongly within me, prompting my curiosity to delve deeper, not only for personal exploration but also because I’m a nonconformist. I’m always questioning established norms and often choose to act against advice given to me. This spirit of rebellion is inherent in me, which is why I prefer collaborating with individuals who share similar interests.

‘I aim to move beyond the traditional patterns and beliefs instilled during upbringing that linger in my mind, seeking a fresh perspective.’

Expressing oneself authentically, being true to who one wants to be, is somewhat of a challenge to societal norms. Isn’t beauty something that varies from person to person? After all, isn’t beauty in the eye of the beholder rather than what we see on magazine covers?

The actress became widely popular following her appearance at Victoria Beckham’s Paris Fashion Week catwalk event, with no makeup on whatsoever.

Starting a new phase for Anderson, traveling to Paris without a makeup artist caused apprehension in her support staff, as she openly acknowledged.

She remembered: “While in Paris, I pondered, ‘Who could possibly be observing me?’ With these large hats covering my head and a significant portion of my face exposed, would anyone really experience a dramatic reaction if I didn’t wear makeup? This question sparked the beginning at Paris Fashion Week.

It instantly made everyone rush and fluster about me, as if they were saying, “No, this isn’t typical behavior,” to which I replied, “Well, that only gives me more motivation to do it.” It wasn’t about achieving world peace or anything grand, but rather it was a personal challenge. I was asking myself, “Why should I spend three hours in a makeup chair when I’m not aiming to be the most beautiful girl there? I’m attending a fashion show. I want to express myself, not conform to beauty standards.”

The sudden action left everyone dashing around me, seemingly shocked by my behavior, saying “This isn’t what people usually do.” But I saw it as an opportunity to push boundaries. It wasn’t about bringing world peace or anything significant, but rather a personal test. I questioned, “Why should I spend three hours getting ready when I’m not trying to be the most beautiful girl there? I’m going to a fashion show. I want to express myself, not conform to beauty standards.

‘I sensed the moment was ripe for change, with no risks involved. At this point, I’m not aiming to construct a persona or seek fame. Instead, I want to leverage my influence to explore new ideas and foster dialogue.’

She explained: “I’m not becoming careless about my appearance. I don’t feel disheveled as I step outside. Instead, I’m stripping away layers to discover more about myself.

‘This is merely the beginning; I can’t predict where life will take me next, and I won’t let anyone dictate my future, especially not my mother.’

1989 marked the start of an influential journey for Anderson, as she made a decision that significantly impacted her life by watching a football game at BC Place stadium in Vancouver alongside her mother.

A 22-year-old woman, previously unidentified to many, was showcased on the stadium’s giant screen while sporting a T-shirt from Labatt’s beer brand. This caught the attention of the brewery’s executives, who swiftly hired her as their company spokesperson.

The action ultimately culminated in a phone call from Playboy, a relocation to Los Angeles, and her highly recognized cover appearance for their monthly men’s magazine in America.

She remembered that while she was still in Vancouver, Playboy contacted her, and afterwards, she phoned her mother to discuss it, who approved of the decision.

If someone were to inquire about my feelings, I’d eagerly seize the opportunity – exactly what she suggested! She urged me to break free from this place, to explore and experience life beyond these borders. So here I go, venturing into the unknown, following her advice, curious to see where this journey leads me.

In the subsequent year, Anderson earned the title of Playmate of the Month. Consequently, she graced the centerfold pages of the magazine during its February 1990 edition.

I had the sensation of losing my footing on a tall structure, yet strangely, I also felt liberated – though this might seem absurd. It was as if I was transforming into someone new.

I plan to become someone who resembles a modern-day Playboy model or actress, as the idea is so detached from my everyday life that it seems surreal. Yet, in this role, I find a sense of liberation.
