Paddy McGuinness makes MAJOR change to his stand-up show after ‘devastating’ ex-wife Christine by making gags about their divorce
As a long-time fan of Paddy McGuinness, I must admit that I was initially taken aback by the news of his jokes about his divorce from Christine causing distress to his ex-wife. Having followed their journey for years, it’s heartbreaking to see their personal struggles becoming fodder for comedy.
I, in consideration of the feelings of my former wife, Christine, have chosen to eliminate jokes related to our divorce from my stand-up act. The pain of our separation was deeply felt, and I aim to respect her sensitivity on this matter.
The comedian who’s currently on tour with his “Nearly There” show, performed for the first time since it became known that Christine had been shocked by the unkind remarks directed at her by Paddy on stage.)
In the recent performance at Middlesbrough, Paddy intentionally avoided discussing his high-profile separation from Christine, who is 36 and remains his housemate at their £2.5 million residence in Cheshire.
At his last show in Blackburn, Paddy started off by joking: “Evening everyone, tonight we gather together as fellow humans, sharing a single purpose – assisting me in covering my divorce costs. It’s been quite an expensive ordeal for yours truly.
The BBC Radio 2 host added: ‘I’m thinking of getting Children In Need to do a bike ride for me next year, or come round to a bedsit in Bolton filming me.’
However, Christine, who is the mother of his 10-year-old twins, Penelope and Leo, and seven-year-old daughter Felicity – all parties involved in their ongoing divorce proceedings – found his jokes less amusing. She had maintained a dignified silence during the divorce process.
According to a source, Christine was deeply upset when she realized that some people were mocking her, feeling extremely saddened, shocked, and down because Paddy planned to incorporate their sorrow into his performances.
In 2022, following 11 years of wedlock, the pair decided to separate. Their divorce proceedings were concluded over the summer; however, they continue to reside together in the same household for the well-being of their minor children.
According to the source, Paddy delivered two 40-minute performances, separated by a thirty-minute interval, without once referring to his divorce or separation from Christine during his act.
As a die-hard admirer, I found myself observing him, noticing that he seemed to be putting forth extra effort, almost as if he was walking on eggshells around his ex-spouse in the realm of humor. He appeared to be mindful and cautious, striving to avoid any additional displeasure or friction with his comedic material.
He was well aware that Christine was upset by his jokes at the start of the show, so he deliberately avoided anything potentially controversial to stay out of trouble.
‘At one point Paddy did reference Christine but only in regards to her autism diagnosis.’
Instead of making fun of his own divorce, Paddy decided to poke fun at Simon Cowell by comparing him to a chocolate bar that has been melted, specifically a Caramel bar.
Paddy added: ‘In my industry, I think Botox has gone out of control, I really do.’
Back in 2021, I discovered my own unique blend of autism and ADHD, a revelation I shared with the world through my personal journey on BBC One’s Unmasking My Autism.
Christine and her partner chose to stay living as a family because they didn’t want to disrupt the lives of their three kids, all of whom have been diagnosed with autism.
TopMob has contacted Paddy’s spokesperson for comment.
A significant aspect of Christine’s autism makes her sensitive towards food, and it seems her kids experience similar challenges.
She discussed the ongoing practice where children engage in a form of education known as “food exploration” or “culinary play.” This activity allows them to familiarize themselves with various foods, learning about their textures and tastes.
After navigating the challenges of my recent divorce, I’ve taken a bold step forward in my personal life. Having showcased my culinary skills on Celebrity MasterChef as a means of overcoming my apprehensions, I am now delighting in the early stages of a new relationship. It’s an exciting time!
In my recent sit-down with the Loose Women, I openly shared that I am venturing into the world of dating. However, there are certain ground rules I’ve set in place – and one of them is non-negotiable: I am not cooking! Yes, you heard it right; I am not stepping foot in the kitchen for this particular relationship. It’s just not my cup of tea.
I’m currently in a new relationship, and things are still fresh between us. We’ve had lengthy conversations before our first meeting, and I made it clear from the start that I prefer activities other than traditional dinner dates at restaurants. I don’t know when we’ll share a meal together, but for now, everything feels exciting and pleasant.
