Paddington 3’s Emily Mortimer addresses taking over Mrs Brown role

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless cinematic adventures, I must say that the news of Emily Mortimer stepping into the shoes of Mrs Brown for ‘Paddington 3’ is nothing short of exhilarating! The fact that Hugh Bonneville, our beloved Mr Brown, suggested her for the role adds a delightful twist to this tale.

The much-anticipated movie featuring Paddington in the United Kingdom hits cinemas next week, and viewers will notice that Mrs. Brown’s character has undergone some changes on screen.

In the upcoming film, Emily Mortimer steps into the part that Sally Hawkins portrayed in the first two movies, as Sally chose not to return for the third installment.

After the announcement, Hawkins described Mortimer as exceptionally exceptional, and later, Hugh Bonneville commended Mortimer’s acting prowess. He stated that Emily simply appeared to be an ideal choice for the role.

Initially, it was Bonneville who proposed Mortimer for the part of Mrs. Brown, and now Mortimer is considering playing that role again in ‘Paddington 3’. She expressed her delight about this to The Telegraph.

The prospect was quite challenging in many aspects, as it involved delving into a new character and world. It felt like a significant obligation, yet refusing – not only to Hugh, but also to Paddington – seemed ungracious. The excitement is palpable; it’s an honor.

She added: “You can’t say no to Paddington. If he turned malevolent, he could really do some damage. He’s a leader of men. You can’t turn him down.”

Earlier, Mortimer collaborated with Paddington, having both acted alongside Ben Whishaw in the film “Mary Poppins Returns.” In this production, they portrayed the characters Michael and Jane Banks respectively.

Due to the nature of the Paddington movies, she hadn’t collaborated with Whishaw in this specific project. However, she was highly commended by him for her courageous endeavor in tackling such a challenging role.

Whishaw expressed his affection for Emily, stating that it’s challenging to surpass Sally Hawkins, who is remarkably talented. However, he commends Emily for having the boldness to take on that role and then making it uniquely hers. This action speaks volumes about her as a person and an actress, Whishaw added.

“She’s truly exceptional at comedy, able to infuse humor into even the smallest moments, phrases, or expressions. It seems acting boils down to being genuine and honest, and Emily manages to do exactly that.

It has been confirmed that “Mrs. Brown” will once again be played by Mortimer, as production on “Paddington 4” has begun to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the beloved character’s creation.

Paddington in Peru is released in UK cinemas on November 8 and in US cinemas on January 17, 2025.
