Paddington 3 sets new record with huge UK opening
As a long-time fan of the Paddington series, I must say that I was absolutely thrilled to witness the phenomenal success of “Paddington in Peru” at the UK box office! Having grown up with the antics of this lovable bear, it’s heartening to see the franchise setting new records and captivating audiences of all ages.
Paddington in Peru has set a new UK box office record after a successful opening weekend.
On the 8th of November, the third installment of Paddington graced cinema screens throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, earning a whopping £9.7 million during its first weekend at the box office.
As reported by Screen Daily, this new release has now become the UK’s largest debut for a homegrown film in 2024, outperforming even the opening weekends of both Paddington and its sequel. Specifically, it surpassed the initial openings of Paddington with £5.1 million and Paddington 2 with £8.3 million.
In the opening weekend of Paddington 3, it secured the third highest earnings at the UK box office of 2024, trailing slightly behind Deadpool & Wolverine (earning approximately £12.6 million) and Inside Out 2 (with a profit of around £11.3 million).
Additionally, it set a new record as the largest opening for Studiocanal, surpassing the recent blockbuster family movies “Despicable Me 4” and “Wonka,” with box office earnings of approximately £8.9 million each.
In its third adventure, the cast for Paddington expanded to include Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas. Notably, Emily Mortimer took over from Sally Hawkins as Mary Brown.
In the movie, the Brown family journey to Peru in search of Paddington’s dear Aunt Lucy, voiced by Imelda Staunton. Upon their arrival, they discover that Aunt Lucy, a senior bear, has gone missing somewhere deep within the lush Amazon jungle.
Colman portrays the role of a Mother Superior who oversees a home for elderly bears situated in Peru. On the other hand, Antonio Banderas, famously known for his part as Puss in Boots, takes on the adventurous character of Hunter Cabot, based in the Amazon region.
The film starring Paddington, set in Peru, received a noteworthy Rotten Tomatoes score of 92% and has predominantly earned positive feedback from film critics.
According to Digital Spy’s Movies Editor Ian Sandwell, the third installment of the film earned four stars. He stated that it “gets back on its feet and delivers exactly what you expect – clever, humorous visuals, amusing jokes, and an emotional core.
