Pacific Palisades' Bay Theater survived the blaze, says Rick Caruso

Despite the destruction of downtown Pacific Palisades from this week’s fierce fires, the Bay Theater surprisingly suffered minimal damage.

Despite surrounding structures turning into embers, Rick Caruso, owner of the Palisades Village shopping-dining-living complex which encompasses a cinema, assured The Times via email on Thursday that “the theater is unscathed.

Netflix runs a high-end movie theater with five screens, showcasing their original films (usually premieres) and carefully selected classic movies. The theater’s architecture is inspired by the Bay Theatre, a nearby cinema that functioned from 1949 to 1978 before being converted into a hardware store.

In late 2018, the Mexican cinema chain Cinépolis established its Bay Theater location, offering an upscale dining experience complete with a fully stocked bar and gourmet kitchen, aimed at catering to the nearby wealthy community.

Scott Stuber, who was head of global films at Netflix at that time, described The Bay as one of those unique locations that combines contemporary charm with a nostalgic feel reminiscent of your old-fashioned Main Street movie theater, when he commented on Netflix’s acquisition of the venue in 2021.

Netflix, just like the Bay, currently has its historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood temporarily shut down because of the fires.
