Pachinko boss breaks down Sunja and Hansu’s ‘deeper’ connection in season 2

As a seasoned gamer of Korean dramas and novels spanning generations, I must say that the anticipation for Season 2 of Pachinko has me more than just a little excited. The first season was a riveting journey through the lives of the Yoo family, and the promise of further exploration into the lives of Sunja’s children has me eager to see how their stories unfold.

Showrunner Soo Hugh hints at a change in the dynamic between Sunja (Minha Kim) and Hansu (Lee Min-ho) in the upcoming season 2.

Reflecting on their relationship over the course of the second season, Hugh told Digital Spy:

“As strange as it is to say, an actual friendship blooms between them.”

In the first episode of the show’s second season on Apple TV+, the old sweethearts meet up again after being apart for fourteen long years.

Expanding on the trajectory of their relationship this season Hugh said:

As a gamer, I can’t help but notice how the first season of this show is all about love and longing. They barely knew each other back then, and it seemed like their relationship was mostly based on attraction. But fast forward to season two, now that they’re parents, and they’ve both grown wiser and older, you can see them connecting in a much deeper, more human way.

In the first season, although she showed great enthusiasm, Hugh mentions that she wasn’t as thrilled about the possibility of whether they would become romantically involved.

“Were deeply curious about whether there could be a profound connection between these two individuals, if they possess the necessary qualities. And as time went on, we began to notice hints that suggested this might indeed be the case.”

As a gamer, diving into season two, I found myself immersed in a fresh set of characters as the narrative of ‘Pachinko’ delved deeper into the lives of Sunja’s offspring, Noa and Mozasu. Hugh confided that narrating this multi-generational tale presented a unique set of challenges this time around.

In our series, there’s an abundance of characters this season. The second season primarily focuses on the next generation, which made managing various plotlines and avoiding a feeling of excessive content quite a challenge.

She added: “One of our main difficulties when planning season two was that season one hadn’t been released yet. This meant I was creating the story structure while uncertain if the first season would even be successful. It felt quite unusual.”

From a logistical standpoint, the complexity increased due to the numerous cities where we filmed. This project had a truly international flair as we seemed to change hotels every evening.

The second season of the television series “Pachinko,” inspired by Min Jin Lee’s acclaimed novel, can be streamed every Friday on Apple TV+.
