OXY says Cloud9 wasn’t listening to their coach in loss to MIBR
After their elimination from the VCT Americas Kickoff 2025, representatives from esports.gg had a conversation with Cloud9’s player OXY.
In simple terms, Francis “OXY” Hoang and his team Cloud9 were knocked out of the VCT Americas Kickoff 2025 tournament. They initially performed well against NRG, but they then suffered consecutive defeats against both G2 Esports and MIBR.
After the elimination game, Xpsp engaged in a brief conversation with the C9 duelist. He expressed his views about his personal performance and made it clear that he believed the team wasn’t effectively heeding their coach‘s instructions during the series.
Lack of restraint by Cloud9 to blame for loss according to OXY
Hey there! Since last year was your first season, you might have heard about the ‘sophomore slump’ in sports. This is when players who have a fantastic rookie year often see a significant drop-off in their second year. Do you think this is just a superstition or are you concerned it could happen to you?
OXY: “To be honest, not everything, but I’ve found my rhythm once more and identified mistakes from the initial two matches. I’m getting back on track with what I was doing last year. However, I don’t subscribe to that belief in superstition.
Let’s discuss your gameplay from today. At first glance, your stats are quite satisfactory. It’s notable that we have been winning map rounds for the first time, and your energy really picked up when you were Operator on Abyss, even securing an Ace using Jett’s knives. So, could you share your initial thoughts about our performance as a team today?
To begin with, it seems we’ve been rather pressed for time. This is due to some adjustments in our team roster and various other tasks. Consequently, we’ve been quite busy for the past few weeks, whether it’s been three or four.
To be frank, I believe we demonstrated potential as a strong team despite the limited rehearsals. However, today, it seemed we didn’t fully heed the coach’s advice. Let me be clear about this.
During the tactical timeout, he came up with an excellent strategy that worked for several turns, leading us to victories. However, our success began to fade as we failed to maintain control of the area. I recall a specific turn, just one minute into the round on Abyss, where we lost everything.
Originally, the team advanced to the middle position, seized it, had control over everything, but within a minute, we found ourselves sitting as a group at A site, while one individual was attempting a retake at location B. Suddenly, we were completely unprepared and I perished on the spot. Unfortunately, we didn’t heed our coach’s instructions, and some of us lacked self-restraint today.
In the beginning, we moved to the center, grabbed it, had everything under control, but just a minute later, we were all four at A site while one person was trying to recapture at B. All of a sudden, we weren’t ready for anything and I lost my life. Unfortunately, we didn’t follow our coach’s advice and some of us acted impulsively today.
Reflecting on our recent game, I can’t help but notice that Abyss was heavily favoring offensive play. Looking back, if I were to focus on the defensive aspects earlier, perhaps things would have unfolded differently. If I could rewind time, I would have paid more attention to strengthening my defenses from the start, reducing the need for such a massive comeback later on.
“The issue was really about space management. We didn’t occupy the space, instead, we provided them with all the resources, knowing they were proficient in that area. They performed admirably whenever they had the chance to execute. In one operation, I eliminated two of their key players, which significantly contributed to our victory. Unfortunately, I can’t recall the details of the second operation where we also emerged victorious, but initially, our performance was subpar, resulting in a weak defense.”
For Pearl, it seemed as if every chance to gather momentum was swiftly blocked by MIBR. Was it the map that caused this? Perhaps it was their team composition, or maybe it was MIBR’s self-assurance propelling them forward.
“It seems they were self-assured from the start, and initially, we dominated the game. However, somewhere along the fourth and fifth rounds, we lost our stride. I’m not sure what went wrong, but we took the pistol round and bonus points. Unfortunately, we faltered in the economy round, which they seized and continued to capitalize on until the end.
The team has had a challenging beginning. Last season, Cloud9 failed to participate in any international competitions during the VCT. Regrettably, they’ve missed the first one this year as well. Is it now time for the team or organization to hit the ’emergency stop’ button, considering their current situation?
As for OXY, he seems confident that Cloud9 is a reputable organization, having participated in numerous games and events. However, he feels that the recent roster changes for their VALORANT team weren’t ideal. There are factors at play that the public may not be aware of, which contributed to these decisions. Regrettably, he admits that he himself is unaware of the specifics behind these moves.
Alright, it seems there won’t be any more official matches for a while. How do you feel about this break, lasting potentially several months without competing in another VCT event?
OXY: “They postponed the beginning initially, but some players preferred an earlier start since last season, as far as I remember, we began around February or even later, it was definitely in February. However, I can understand the schedule to a certain degree. I don’t believe we should have started this early, pushing it back to January.
After the New Year and Christmas holidays, teams are resuming training with a two-week window. I take issue only with the advantage higher-seeded teams seem to have – essentially, they get a bye round, which means if they win that match, they have an extra week off compared to other teams. In contrast, we’ve had to train every day.
As I eagerly await Cloud9’s return to the server, here are some key areas I plan to focus on improving for my gameplay:
1. Communication with my team: Clear and concise calls will ensure we stay coordinated and adapt quickly to changing situations.
2. Map awareness: Keeping tabs on enemy movements and positions will help us anticipate their strategies and counter them effectively.
3. Positioning: Mastering the art of positioning myself, as well as my teammates, will allow us to take advantage of strategic high ground and flanking opportunities.
4. Aim and reaction time: Continuously working on my aim and reaction speed will help me land crucial shots during tense moments and make quick decisions under pressure.
5. Game sense: Developing a strong understanding of the game’s mechanics, such as weapon stats, spawn timings, and map layouts, will give us an edge in outsmarting our opponents.
By focusing on these aspects, I hope to return during the first stage ready to compete at the highest level and bring home victories for my team!
“I believe the best course of action is to continue with my current path. This means staying true to myself, maintaining my approach, and keeping confidence high. Let’s not lose sight of who I am and what I’ve been doing.
