Genji looks older and wears his scars well in his new Overwatch skin.
Overwatch Season 1 is launching on February 10th, and Blizzard has given us a sneak peek at the new skins coming in the Battle Pass. The highlights include a first-ever look at Genji’s face!
Genji face reveal in Overwatch
Since the release of the “Dragons” short in 2016, Overwatch players have been curious about what Genji’s face looks like beneath his mask. Although some skins, like Royal Swordsman and Happi Genji, reveal his face, they show him as a younger man. This is particularly clear when comparing those skins to the Young Genji skin.
Even when Overwatch 2 features collaborative skins, like Zuko Genji or Genos Genji, they depict a younger version of Genji’s face, before his battle with his brother Hanzo.
Overwatch shows Genji’s scars
The battle with Hanzo nearly killed Genji, and Hanzo thought his brother had died. Fortunately, Overwatch and Mercy saved Genji and used technology to rebuild his body. He then joined Blackwatch, Overwatch’s secret operations team. After Overwatch fell apart, Genji struggled, but he eventually found purpose and inner peace through a meeting with Zenyatta.
To mark the anniversary of his brother’s supposed death, the older Shimada brother went to the ruins of Shimada Castle to pay his respects. There, he unexpectedly came face-to-face with Genji, and they fought. During the battle, Genji summoned a dragon, which shocked his brother, as only members of the Shimada clan were believed to be able to control dragons. Genji then partially revealed his face to his brother.
Genji made a brief appearance in the non-official game “Loverwatch” in 2023, but it wasn’t a complete reveal of the character.
An older Genji with scars in Overwatch
We now have a clearer idea of what an older Genji looks like, including his scars. The new Overwatch Season 1 Battle Pass skin accurately portrays the 37-year-old hero.
Fans quickly started creating artwork featuring the new character. Some even pointed out a similarity between his hairstyle and that of Hanzo’s.
Overwatch Season 1 Battle Pass skins
The new Overwatch Season 1 Battle Pass includes skins for Tracer and Sojourn, plus options for Talon characters like Vendetta, Emre, Moira, and Mauga. The skins seem to focus on the ongoing conflict between Talon and Overwatch, using a color scheme of blue for Overwatch and red for Talon.
