Overwatch gets subroles: “There will no longer just be tanks, damage, and supports.”

This guide explains the new sub-roles in Overwatch and why they’re being added to the game.

Overwatch Season 1 is introducing new roles within each hero category – Tank, Damage, and Support. These ‘subroles,’ also called sub-passives, add extra abilities and nuances to how heroes play. Here’s a quick guide to understanding everything about them, along with insights from the Overwatch team.

How Overwatch subroles work

Overwatch Season 1 launches on February 10th with a new system of subroles for each hero. These subroles – like Bruiser, Initiator, and Medic – help define how heroes play. For example, heroes like Mizuki, Brigitte, Illari, Juno, and Wuyang are classified as ‘Survivors.’ When these heroes use a movement ability during a match, they’ll automatically start regaining health.

Here’s a breakdown of the different roles within Overwatch, categorized by Tank, Damage, and Support heroes. They’re listed in alphabetical order, and you can quickly find a specific hero by using the search function on your device (CTRL + F on computers or the “Find in page” feature on mobile).

Overwatch subroles explained

Kenny Hudson, a senior game producer, explained the thinking behind the new subroles system. He said it’s not just who players choose, but how they play. When Season 1 launches, the traditional tank, damage, and support roles will be more specific. Each role will have sub-categories, each with unique abilities that fit different playstyles and skills within Overwatch.

We’re updating how heroes are categorized. Damage-dealing heroes will now fall into one of four types: Recon, Flanker, Specialist, or Sharpshooter. Support heroes will be divided into Survivor, Medic, and Tactician roles. Finally, for tanks, would you prefer a classic, sturdy Stalwart, a more adaptable Bruiser, or a tank focused on initiating attacks from the back lines?

He explained that the new subroles in Overwatch will also affect how perks function. Since subroles might change how players use their preferred heroes, some perks are being adjusted. He noted that perks have significantly influenced gameplay and team matchups over the past year, and the team is working on balancing them while also ensuring Overwatch remains enjoyable.
