Overwatch Art Director Bill Petras Has Passed Away Unexpectedly

Bill Petras, Overwatch and World of Warcraft Art Director, has unexpectedly passed away.

In a heartfelt LinkedIn post (as reported by GI.biz), Harley D. Huggins II, a previous director of Blizzard Entertainment’s Cinematic Projects, shared the sad news that Bill Petras, a legendary figure in game development, had tragically passed away. Known for his exceptional artistic talents, Bill spent nearly two decades contributing to Blizzard Entertainment’s projects.

He took great pride in his work at that place, particularly his role as Art Director on both World of Warcraft and Overwatch,” Huggins pointed out.

Back in the ’90s, I kicked off my career designing PC games such as Star Crusader and BloodNet. Fast forward to 1997, I became part of the Blizzard family, contributing to the creation of StarCraft and its expansion pack, Brood War. I had the privilege of crafting the game’s cover art and lending my artistic skills within the game itself, leaving an indelible mark on one of the most iconic RTS games ever made.

After working on both “Warcraft III” and “World of Warcraft”, Petras left Blizzard Entertainment in 2005 to develop an MMO called “Firefall”. He went back to the studio in 2010 and remained there until 2021, during which time he served as Art Director for “Overwatch”.
