Overwatch 2 to keep 6v6 Open Queue game mode in Season 16
In Season 16, Overwatch 2 intends to maintain the 6v6 team format, generating excitement among players globally.
As Overwatch 2’s Season 16 nears, there’s growing curiosity about what Season content will carry over and what fresh content players can expect. The 6v6 Open Queue game mode, reintroduced last season, is one of the well-liked modes making a comeback in Season 16.
And Overwatch 2 fans are ecstatic. Here are the details.
6v6s to stay in Overwatch 2 going into Season 16
If you’re really into 6v6s in Overwatch 2, here’s some exciting news: Your favorite game mode is set to make its move to Season 16! The past few months have seen this mode generating a lot of buzz, and it seems that Blizzard can’t resist the excitement, deciding to bring the game over.
For now, Overwatch 2 intends to operate the Open Queue for all game modes across both Quick Match and Competitive, allowing players to participate in 6 versus 6 matches consistently during Season 16.
To put it simply, during Season 15 of Overwatch 2, Competitive 6v6 ranked as the third favorite gameplay option among players. However, there was one instance where it wasn’t the top choice – when the game unveiled its Totally Normalwatch April Fool’s Day mode.
In addition, Blizzard shared some statistics, revealing that five-versus-five matches continue to be more popular (with three times as many players participating compared to six-versus-six games), yet the six-versus-six game mode remains active and populated enough for Overwatch 2 to maintain it during Season 16.
6v6s to continue the 2-tank limit in Overwatch 2’s Season 16
In Season 16, just like before, teams will continue to utilize the two-tank strategy. This allows for a maximum of two tank characters on each team, granting them significant offensive strength.
As a fan, I’d rephrase it like this: “I, as a tank player in 6v6, truly appreciate having another tank ally nearby,” according to Blizzard in their latest blog post. “Regardless of the role we pick, we all are thrilled about reduced wait times for matches and the freedom to switch roles during gameplay.
Because wait times remain steady and good throughout for both 5v5s and 6v6s, Blizzard believes this provides a solid argument for keeping 6v6s within the game.
Are you excited for 6v6s to stay a relevant game mode in Overwatch 2 Season 16?
When does Season 16 begin?
The commencement of Season 16 for Overwatch 2 is scheduled for April 22, 2025. Previously, we had Season 15 that started in mid-February, and as with other Overwatch seasons, it typically lasts around two months.
From new skins to new perks and more, Overwatch 2 Season 16 is about to be one for the books.
