Overwatch 2 is getting competitive 6v6 next season
Will 6v6 return permanently in Overwatch 2? Here’s what the game director had to say about it.
In his first blog post of the year, Aaron Keller, the game director for Overwatch 2, shared some exciting news. He announced that a mini-competitive season with six-versus-six (6v6) gameplay will be introduced in Overwatch 2. This competitive mode using 6v6 format is planned to take place during the middle of Season 15.
Overwatch 2 6v6 competitive in Season 15
Last year, I participated in Overwatch 2’s 6v6 Role Queue playtest, and right now, the game is hosting a 6v6 Min 1, Max 3 version. Out of all the time spent playing, the 6v6 Role Queue mode accounted for around 10%.
As a gamer, I want to share some insights about our Quick Play mode in Role Queued format. This particular gameplay mode makes up around 35-40% of the total playtime we spend, though it was less during the 6v6 tests. It’s clear that there’s an appetite for a team size like this, but exactly how big that desire is remains to be seen.
Is Overwatch 2 6v6 returning permanently?
As Keller suggests, we haven’t yet been able to predict the lasting impact of the 6v6 mode in Overwatch 2. Nevertheless, he expresses optimism that this mode might persist in some capacity, and importantly, emphasizes that the developers are not prepared to swap out the classic five-versus-five (5v5) gameplay format just yet.
Can I play 6v6 in Overwatch 2 now?
Hey there! I’m excited to share that for a limited time, I’ve been diving into Overwatch 2’s exclusive 6v6 Min 1, Max 3 playtest mode. This thrilling gameplay will be available until the upcoming February 4 update. So if you’re eager to join in, don’t miss out – there are just a few days left! To jump straight into the action, simply navigate your way through the main menu, opt for “Unranked”, and then select the “Minimum One 6v6” option. Let’s conquer together!
