As a seasoned Overwatch gamer with countless hours under my belt and a passion for team-based strategy games, I must say that the recent announcement of Overwatch 2 testing both 6v6 and 5v5 formats has me thoroughly excited!
Will Overwatch 2 have both 6v6 and 5v5? Here are the details.
In a recent announcement, Overwatch 2’s game director, Aaron Keller, has disclosed some intentions to conduct trials with a 6-versus-6 setup. Here are the specifics about the Overwatch 2 6v6 format as well as additional information.
Overwatch 2 announces 6v6 tests
In an official announcement, Keller unveiled that Overwatch 2 will conduct two separate 6v6 trials during the upcoming season. The first trial commences a week into Season 14 and aims to gauge players’ preferences for six-player teams over the traditional five. This trial also represents a modification of the Overwatch 2 Open Queue, ensuring that each team consists of at least one player in every role, but no more than three per position.
In Overwatch 2, Keller mentioned that there are several unique team configurations you can experiment with due to various character combinations. Notably, he added that players will be able to change roles dynamically during a game, as long as this swap doesn’t exceed the ‘Minimum 1, Maximum 3’ role limit.
During the heat of Overwatch 2 Season 14, I’ll be diving back into the action with a fresh test. This time around, we’re sticking to the 2-2-2 composition and embracing some changes that Overwatch 2 has been brewing – expect fewer crowd control abilities and hero reworks. Let’s see how this shakes things up!

New Quick Play: Hacked in Overwatch 2 Season 13
Keller’s post went on to disclose that this season will include two 5v5 trials, one of which is a fresh Quick Play event titled “Limited 2.” In this game, each role can only have a maximum of two players participating. Additionally, the “Kingmaker” game mode will also restrict roles to a maximum of two per team. However, any player playing solo in their designated role will receive an added advantage in this scenario.
These two Quick Play: Hacked variations will give the Overwatch 2 team a benchmark and framework for the 6v6 tests.

Does Overwatch 2 have a universe where 5v5 and 6v6 modes coexist permanently? I wouldn’t have thought so a few months back. However, as we contemplate the future of Overwatch 2, keeping in mind our goal of creating a game that satisfies our players, it’s clear that they might desire multiple experiences. This is something we would need to think about for the game’s development.
