As a long-time Overwatch 2 gamer and avid follower of competitive scenes, I’m both excited and intrigued by the new hero ban mechanic being introduced at this year’s Esports World Cup (EWC). With my heart racing in anticipation for the international tournament, I can’t help but reflect on how this could potentially change the gameplay dynamics and strategies.

The Overwatch 2 Esports World Cup is underway with fierce competition among the 16 participating teams. With an enormous $1,050,000 USD prize at stake, their determination and focus are stronger than ever.

EWC introduces Hero Bans in Overwatch 2
An intriguing twist in Overwatch 2’s competitive scene is the implementation of hero bans during the EWC. While not an entirely new concept, the debate over banning heroes in high-level Overwatch matches has lingered for a while.
As more people become critical of Mauga’s actions and express their frustration, the imposed bans are viewed as a positive development by the Overwatch 2 community. Essentially, they prefer fewer encounters with Mauga.

In short, the banning process and rulings at the Esports World Cup for Overwatch 2 is as follows:
- Each team gets to ban one hero per map
- The ban affects both teams
- Loser of the previous map picks the ban order
- Second team must ban a different role than the first
- Teams can’t repeat their own bans, but can repeat bans from the opposing team
- Team lineup selection follows the ban process

Although the new rules are straightforward, they represent a significant shift for serious Overwatch 2 competition. If the team performance differences in the game prove greater than anticipated as a result of the ban system, then it may be adopted in the Overwatch Contenders Series.
So, we’ll just need to watch EWC and see how the hero bans have an impact on the games.
