In this discussion, let’s delve into the insights shared by the Overwatch 2 team regarding the “unusual” characters, and we’ll explore their approach to designing these unique heroes.
During a live stream, the developers of Overwatch 2 clarified a misconception regarding their approach to the game’s character design. There had been a rumor suggesting that characters like Wrecking Ball and Ramattra were no longer part of their plans, but this appears to be incorrect.
Overwatch 2 to get new oddball hero
As a passionate fan, I was thrilled during the livestream when Game Director Alec Dawson shared some exciting news about Overwatch 2. He mentioned that the game’s character roster, including fan favorites like Winston and Bastion, plays a significant role in maintaining the game’s unique identity. Moreover, he hinted at a new hero with an “oddity” theme being developed. We can expect more details about this intriguing addition soon!
During the livestream, I shared that the Overwatch team is made up of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and peculiar characters. Heroes like Winston and Bastion are crucial elements that give our universe its distinctive flavor. They’re the secret ingredient that sets Overwatch apart from other universes. While we won’t delve into one curious new character right now, keep an eye out in the coming months as I excitedly reveal more about these upcoming heroes!

Dylan Snyder, the lead designer of Stadium, added his thoughts to the topic. He confidently told fans that the creators of Overwatch 2 truly appreciate quirky characters and unusual elements.
“Y’all I promise you the team loves oddballs and oddities,” he wrote. “Trust.”
Addressing Overwatch 2’s oddballs and attractive characters
During a group discussion, a media outlet inquired if Overwatch 2 was focusing more on developing traditionally attractive human characters rather than unique characters like Wrecking Ball, Winston, and Ramattra. In response, the Overwatch 2 development team clarified that they are not abandoning these types of characters, and any reports to the contrary are untrue.
The creators of Overwatch 2 revealed that they design heroes to be inspiring and unusual characters. They mentioned that creating these unique heroes can be complex due to their intricate equipment and designs, but they are currently developing some thrilling ones. This aligns with what Dawson shared during today’s live stream.
In simpler terms, Daryl Tan, the lead character designer, stated during a group interview that when creating Overwatch heroes, they are designed to be admirable in various aspects. This includes their physical attributes, skills, and overall coolness factor – qualities that people can look up to. Essentially, their intention is always to make these characters inspiring and progressive.
As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: “I’m excited to share that we’re not stopping at what we’ve done so far! It’s like adding quirky characters such as Wrecking Ball to the mix. Rest assured, we’ll be delving into more heroes, and you can expect them to pop up here and there. I may not reveal too much just yet, but trust me, there are some thrilling developments on the horizon!
Kenny Hudson, the producer for the heroes in Overwatch 2, elaborated further. He mentioned that the development process for these heroes can stem from various aspects, such as storyline, visual design, or gameplay mechanics. Heroes like Ramattra and Wrecking Ball present unique difficulties due to their intricate rigging and animations, but the team remains dedicated to addressing these complex characters in their work.
Hudson mentioned that they often approach their work from three different angles: narrative, art, and kit. One of the difficulties they face when creating characters like Ramattra and Wrecking Ball is finding ways to make their complex rigs and models interact appropriately with the abilities and portrayals they have in mind. This is a task they are currently working on.
What is Overwatch 2’s hero design philosophy?
During an earlier conversation with Xpsp, Dawson explained that the primary objective when creating each character for Overwatch 2 is to give players the sensation of being the central figure in their own game. The characters are also designed to provide a progression challenge, ensuring players remain captivated for numerous hours. For additional insight, this discussion took place during Hazard’s playtest at DreamHack Stockholm over the weekend.
Esports.gg: “From crafting Ramattra, Lifeweaver, and now Hazard, it’s clear that our Overwatch team has a knack for designing memorable heroes and their backstories. What do you think is the driving force behind your hero creation process, making players exclaim, ‘I can’t wait to play them!’?
In our approach, whether discussing a character’s appearance or skills, we ensure each hero is central to their own video game-like experience. This is how we design our heroes, offering endless playability where one could spend hundreds of hours mastering them. We aim for a continuous learning curve until you truly excel, as if they were the protagonists of their individual games, even though they are part of the Overwatch roster.
Hudson also shared his thoughts, stating that the guiding principle is about constant learning.
For me personally, it’s challenging to pinpoint a single hero as they all learn from previous experiences, good or bad. We carry these lessons forward and implement them in the creation of new heroes. Our process often involves working on a new hero before fully completing the current one. This allows us to seamlessly incorporate these real-time lessons into the next project. In essence, my guiding philosophy would be continuous learning and growth.
