Overwatch 2 6v6 Test Sessions to Commence Alongside Season 14 This December

As a seasoned Overwatch player with countless hours logged into both the original and its sequel, I must admit my excitement is palpable as Season 14 approaches. The return of 6v6 gameplay has been a long-awaited demand from the community, and it’s heartening to see Blizzard finally addressing this request.

As we enjoy the thrills of Season 13 in Overwatch 2, filled with spooky activities in Junkenstein’s Laboratory for Halloween, Blizzard has announced their intentions to reintroduce 6v6 gameplay with the arrival of Season 14 in December.

Fans of the original Overwatch may remember that 6-vs-6 was once the usual format, but the sequel shifted to 5-vs-5. For a while now, there have been requests from players wanting a return to the 6-vs-6 format, and Blizzard has been contemplating this idea for quite some time.

According to Game Director Aaron Keller, we now have a clear path towards reintroducing the 6v6 format in Overwatch 2. The initial testing phase is set to begin during the first week of Season 14, which is slated to start on December 10th. This update will include team configurations that necessitate “at least” one player for each role, with a maximum of three per role.

Midway through Season 14, a fresh trial will be initiated, giving players an opportunity to experience the traditional 2-2-2 setup, infused with some novel concepts that have been incorporated into Overwatch 2, such as reduced crowd control (CC) and character overhauls.

Keller explains that the 6v6 matches will be assigned a dedicated card within the Unranked section alongside various game modes. Importantly, these tests won’t replace other kinds of gameplay experiences such as seasonal events and Quick Play.

As an enthusiastic gamer, I’m excited to share that we’re making some adjustments focusing on two specific game modes. In these modes, you might notice a shift in tank power and survivability, particularly in the fast-paced 6v6 formats. Additionally, we’ll be reevaluating several tank passives that were introduced in Overwatch 2 to ensure they add the right balance and excitement to the gameplay experience.

Eventually, the 6v6 test stage will decide if Overwatch 2 should bring back this game mode, and whether it gains player interest. Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 Season 13: Spellbinder is currently active, offering a fresh dose of Halloween fun that lasts until November 4th.
