The sci-fi thriller Severance has announced news about its upcoming third season, including a significant change in who’s working on it. We also now have a good idea of when filming will likely begin.
The popular show, about workers at the mysterious Lumon Industries who’ve had their work and personal lives completely separated through a special procedure, released its second season on Apple TV last year.
The show has become very popular with viewers, and many have praised it online – some on IMDb have even called it exceptional, highlighting its skillful use of suspense, mystery, and thought-provoking themes.

I just heard some really exciting news! Apparently, the streamer is taking control of the show’s production – they’re building their own studio to make it! For the first two seasons, Fifth Season was handling everything, but now the streamer owns the show completely, including all the rights. Deadline reported all the details, and I’m so hyped to see what they do with it now!
Despite the changes, Fifth Season will remain involved as an executive producer. According to reports, this new arrangement could help ensure a more stable production after some financial difficulties during the second season.

Filming for season 3 might begin this summer, but scripts are still under development. Director Ben Stiller and Apple want to ensure the script is fully polished before starting production, as issues with the script in season 2 caused delays and the need for reshoots.
Stiller promised fans the next season of the show won’t be delayed as long as the gap between the first and second seasons, meaning they won’t have to wait another three years.
Look, waiting three years isn’t the goal at all,” he said on the New Heights podcast. “We’re hoping to share what we’ve got planned really soon, so stay tuned!”

Looking back at the delays caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, it was a bit of a scramble to get things going again. We filmed season two over a really long stretch – 186 days, actually! Editing always takes time, but honestly, I was so relieved to see the audience still there when we finally released it. It meant a lot.
Our main goal was to attract new viewers to the first season of the show. Apple did a great job promoting it, and we made sure to get as much media coverage as possible.
Ben Stiller won’t be directing any episodes in the third season, but he’s still involved creatively. He expressed confidence in the new directors and the show’s team, and believes the upcoming episodes will be the strongest ones yet.
Severance seasons 1-2 are streaming now on Apple TV+.
