OutRun Movie Directed by Michael Bay and Produced by Sydney Sweeney Reportedly in the Pipeline
It’s possible that SEGA is considering transforming another one of its popular video game franchises into a movie, inspired by the financial success of their “Sonic the Hedgehog” films. A potential “OutRun” movie, rumored to be directed by Michael Bay, who has previously worked on projects like “Transformers” and “Bad Boys,” is reportedly in the works.
As a passionate admirer of the iconic 1986 arcade racer, OutRun, I’m thrilled to share that reports from Deadline suggest the upcoming film is being scripted by none other than Jayson Rothwell. Interestingly, it seems Sydney Sweeney, who’s made waves in The White Lotus, will be involved in producing rather than starring in this project.
Regarding the plot, it seems more like an action-packed journey involving a driver and their companion cruising between locations in a striking red Ferrari, given that the game isn’t particularly heavy on story details. However, considering how lucrative video game adaptations have become, the lack of a substantial narrative might not be a significant concern.
Video game adaptations, like “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Sonic,” and “A Minecraft Movie” raking in profits at the box office and “The Last of Us” TV series thriving with its second season, show no signs of slowing down. As for “OutRun,” we can all wish for a movie that could rekindle interest in Sega’s classic racer; the last release was “OutRun Online Arcade” back in 2009.
In March 2027, we can expect the launch of “Sonic the Hedgehog 4”. Additionally, discussions regarding adaptations for “Shinobi” and “Streets of Rage” have been circulating as well.
