As a fervent admirer, it seems that Michael Bay, renowned for transforming iconic intellectual properties into high-octane spectacles, is gearing up to join the wave of successful video game adaptations. According to recent reports from Deadline, Universal is planning to cash in on the popularity of games like Minecraft and the enduring affection for nostalgia among moviegoers by entrusting Bay with directing and producing a cinematic take on Sega’s 1986 racing game, Outrun.

Accompanying the journey will be, a perfect representation of the type of glamorous blonde character that adorned the cover of the video game upon its debut. Toru Nakahara is set to produce for Sega, with Shuji Utsumi, president/COO of Sega Corporation, overseeing the project on their behalf. Jayson Rothwell, known for his work on Polar and Arachnid, is writing the script; however, the plot details remain a secret. It’s a racing game, leaving one to wonder what the storyline could entail.

In the 1980s, “Outrun” was a popular arcade game by Sega, and since then, it has produced several sequels, including versions for systems like the Mega Drive. At first glance, it might seem just another racing game, but due to being one of the earliest games to offer an immersive driving experience in arcades, “Outrun” is a franchise that can likely draw crowds based on its nostalgic reputation alone.
