After a wonderful run of eight seasons, spanning twelve years and over 100 episodes, the popular historical drama Outlander will sadly be ending later this year.
The epic series returned on Friday, March 6th, with the first episode of its eighth and final season, bringing the story of Claire and Jamie Fraser to a close.
Even though the last episode of the show won’t be on Starz and MGM+ for a couple more months, Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan recently spoke with Digital Spy about what to expect in the final season – though they confessed they haven’t been told how the story concludes!

Caitríona Balfe remembered that the showrunner, Matthew B. Roberts, included some fake scenes in the finale. They did this because the writers wanted to avoid spoilers and keep the true ending a surprise, so there were many different versions of the script circulating.
Honestly, keeping things under wraps on set is the toughest part! Everyone was buzzing, constantly asking ‘What’s going on?’ or trying to figure out what all the mystery meant. But I have to give it to the cast and crew, they were amazing at not letting anything slip – they really kept everything secret!
What to Read Next
We were all really eager to find out what happened, and we kept pressing them for information, but it seems they had other plans, according to Heughan. He explained that the final outcome is still uncertain, even though they’ve finished filming. A lot can happen during editing, so they don’t know for sure how the story will conclude.
The actors, who have been on the show for all eight seasons, were asked if they’d consider returning for future installments or a new spin-off. Both were open to the idea, with Caitríona Balfe explaining that it would come down to the quality of the writing.

We at Digital Spy recently watched the first three episodes of the final season, and we’re confident fans will love them. We thought it was the best start to a season since the very beginning of the show.
After watching the first few episodes, I’m getting seriously hooked! It feels like this season is shaping up to be just as gripping, full of surprises, and, let’s be honest, romantic as the seasons we all loved. And as a huge fan of Jamie, Claire, and even Roger and Brianna, I’m really hoping the finale is an emotional rollercoaster – in the best way possible! I’m bracing myself for a good cry!
Outlander airs on Starz in the US, and streams via MGM+ on Prime Video Channels in the UK.
