Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe opens up on filming “emotional” final ever scene

As a die-hard Outlander fan, I can hardly contain my emotions as Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan bid their on-screen characters farewell in the final scenes of the series. The anticipation for these moments has been building since the first season premiered, and now that we’re nearing the end, it’s bittersweet to say the least.

Actress Caitríona Balfe, famous for her role in Outlander, has shared insights about shooting her last scene ever for the popular Starz series.

Even though we haven’t seen the second part of the seventh season of “Outlander” yet, the cast has completed filming for the eighth and concluding series, where viewers will say goodbye to Claire, portrayed by Caitriona Balfe, and Jamie, played by Sam Heughan.

During her chat on The One Show last night (November 19) alongside Heughan, Balfe opened up about the final scene, saying: “Wow, it was incredibly emotional. I mean, any of those scenes were bound to be emotional since many of them are.

She added: “We’ve consumed a pair of sandwiches. It seems to me that we first had the formal one, followed by some additional add-ons or extras.

“But for our official wrap, we had lots of executives who came in and there was lots of the cast who came to the studio, the whole studio was full and we had a seven-minute scene.”

Heughan added, “This particular scene is nearly eight minutes long, packed with dialogues, and, like many scenes in Outlander, it’s quite intense and emotional.

“There’s a lot of goodbyes in the scene but then it has this double meaning because we’re also saying goodbye.”

Later on, Balfe mentioned: “I believe my facial expression took an unusual turn. Particularly, a part of my face spasmed in a way I hadn’t realized was feasible – it was simply an emotional response.

Previously this year, Diana Gabaldon, the writer behind Outlander, disclosed that the television adaptation will feature an alternate conclusion compared to the books.

Because the television series’ season is shorter and the last three books (one yet to be published) haven’t been turned into episodes, she clarified that the show creators will need to map out a new path on their own.

She mentioned that most likely people would accept the changes, but it wouldn’t bear much similarity to Book 10 due to limited space available.

Regardless of having a complete version of the book, the performance wouldn’t mirror its content in any way.

In the United States, the series “Outlander” is aired on Starz, while viewers in the UK can stream it through MGM+ on Amazon Prime Video Channels. The second part of season 7 will make its debut on November 22.
