Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser) breaks down that surprise proposal
As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for historical dramas and a soft spot for complex characters, I must say that the latest episode of Outlander left me absolutely spellbound! The twist at the end, with Lord John Grey delivering the grim news about Jamie’s fate, was nothing short of heart-wrenching. Caitriona Balfe‘s portrayal of Claire’s grief was so raw and authentic that it felt like I could almost reach out and touch it.
In the latest installment of “Outlander,” titled “Brotherly Love,” the story concludes with an unexpected turn: Lord John Grey (David Berry) informs his friend Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) that her husband Jamie (Sam Heughan) may have perished during their journey to the American colonies, as the ship he was aboard appears to have sunk.
Clearly, Claire is deeply affected. Balfe shared with TV Insider that Claire’s path this season is full of ups and downs. “I believe for Claire, this is her truth,” she explained. “This is the information she’s received, and…regardless of how she feels, she has no real reason to doubt it.
If you’re tuning in from home, you might doubt that Jamie is truly deceased; after all, he’s a key character and actor Sam Heughan has gained significant popularity in the series. We’re merely two episodes into season 7 part 2 with six more to go. It’s likely that Jamie will survive, but Caitriona Balfe, who portrays Claire, isn’t aware of that yet. “Yes, it’s truly heart-wrenching,” Balfe explained. “I have to act out the grief. She genuinely believes it. And yes, this episode is quite intense.
Sam Heughan jokes that Lord John Grey’s behavior towards Claire is “disgraceful”
Intriguingly enough, I find myself drawn into a whirlwind of intrigue as it unfolds that Claire is currently being pursued for rebellious actions. At present, she resides in Philadelphia, graciously invited by Lord John Grey, whose request for her medical expertise led to her departure from Jamie back in Scotland. Inevitably, we must part ways, knowing our reunion would transpire at a later date. However, when the authorities seek her out, Lord John Grey swiftly intervenes, proposing marriage as a means to shield Claire from imprisonment.
It’s clear that Claire is drawn into some complex political machinations, as shown by her exchanging secret messages,” Balfe explained. “In essence, she acts as a spy and is discovered in the act. To shield her, Lord John proposes marriage, demonstrating a remarkable sense of honor.
Lord John Grey’s sexual orientation is homosexual, making his actions more of a tactical maneuver than a romantic one. Yet, Heughan playfully criticized Grey as being “scandalous,” but Balfe firmly disagreed, stating, “It’s quite knightly.
In case I failed to mention earlier, Lord John Grey serves as the adoptive father to Jamie’s son William (Charles Vandervaart), who is unaware that Jamie is his biological dad. The tension in this household is palpable, given that Jamie is moments away from walking through the door and exposing the fact he didn’t perish at sea. Adding to the drama, there’s a possibility that Jamie’s wife could be married to his gay friend. It’s like watching a daytime soap opera unfold right before our eyes!
