Outlander star’s “tense” Scotland-set survival thriller is now streaming for free

Looking for a free scary movie night? The survival thriller Mercy Falls, featuring Lauren Lyle from Outlander, is now streaming on Tubi. Set against the stunning but dangerous backdrop of the Scottish Highlands, this 2023 film delivers plenty of thrills.

In Mercy Falls, Lyle plays Rhona, who travels to the Scottish Highlands with her friends to find a family cabin that’s been lost for years.

So, our road trip started out fun, but things went south fast. A terrible accident happened, and suddenly everyone was looking at each other, and it turned into a real mess of betrayal and even murder. To make things even weirder, we picked up a hitchhiker named Carla, and I quickly got the feeling something was seriously off about her – she wasn’t who she seemed to be.

As the characters reach their destination, relationships become complicated and conflicts begin to surface, leading to a dark and unsettling turn of events.

As more secrets come to light, the danger increases, and a desperate battle for survival begins. Will anyone survive?

What to Read Next

When Mercy Falls came out, reviews were mixed. It received a ‘Fresh’ rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Starburst magazine described Ryan Hendrick’s Mercy Falls as a generally suspenseful, though somewhat predictable, thriller. They praised its impactful gore and beautiful scenery.

According to The Guardian, Mercy Falls has fundamental flaws in its storytelling. It wrongly assumes characters’ romantic interests define who they are, and it makes them behave illogically just to move the plot forward.

According to The Arts Desk, Mercy Falls is surprisingly engaging. They particularly praised John Rhodes’s beautiful filming of the Scottish highlands, describing it as a stunning blend of light, mist, trees, rocky areas, and valleys leading to the film’s waterfall.

The Radio Times rated the film 3 out of 5 stars, noting that viewers need to overlook some logical flaws. However, they praised the film’s clever and tense conflict, which elevates it beyond typical horror movies.

Lauren Lyle, known for her role as the main detective in Karen Pirie, recently discussed with Digital Spy what she hoped audiences would take away from her new movie, Mercy Falls.

“It’s just meant to be fun, a little bit of silly escapism,” Lyle explained. “I think movies can sometimes be made simply to entertain, let you get away from things, and give you a little excitement.”

It doesn’t need to be a huge deal – I just hope everyone has some fun with it.
